Welcome to Fort Buchanan, "Sentinel of the Caribbean" and the only federal military installation in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. The installation is located in the metropolitan area of San Juan, capital of Puerto Rico. Known as the “Island of Enchantment”, Puerto Rico offers a variety of landscapes, from white sandy beaches to lush green mountains and tropical forests. All within a mixture of history and culture. The island is approximately 100 miles by 35 miles and similar in size to Connecticut.
The installation has been under the control of the following commands: 1966-US Navy; 1971-Third US Army; 1973-Forces Command (FORSCOM); 1999-US Southern Command (USARSO); 2002-Installation Management Agency (IMA); 2003-IMA Reserve Installation; 2006-Installation Management Command (IMCOM). On October 1, 2008 the Commanding General of the 81st Regional Readiness Command became Fort Buchanan’s Senior Mission Commander under the U.S. Army Reserve Command. Based on December 2008 Unified Command Plan, Fort Buchanan falls under the U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) area of operations.
Among the factors that make U.S. Army Garrison Fort Buchanan unique are: its key and strategic location providing fast and cost-effective support to missions in the Caribbean, Central and South America area of responsibility; its Hispanic cultural ties with Latin America; and its significant role as host of "joint" sister services reserve components representing the U.S. Armed Forces in Puerto Rico.
The mission of the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Buchanan is, a forward based training platform dedicated to enhancing individual and unit readiness and a forward based staging platform capable of rapidly deploying Joint Combined Arms Forces in support of Combatant Commanders requirements.
