Colonel Peter J. Young

Colonel Peter J. Young entered military service in 1997, serving two years as an enlisted Soldier before earning an enlisted nomination to the United States Military Academy. He commissioned in the U.S Army Engineer Corps in 2003.    

From 2003-2006, Young was assigned as Sapper Platoon Leader and Engineer Company Executive Officer with the 307th Engineer Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He transitioned to the Special Forces branch in 2008 as a captain and served as Military Freefall Detachment Commander, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, NC from 2008-2011, deploying twice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. 

As a field grade officer, Young’s assignments included Assistant Professor, United States Military Academy, West Point, NY; Small Unit Tactics Company Commander and Battalion Operations Officer, 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne), Camp Mackall, NC; Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General, Special Operations Joint Task Force –Afghanistan; and Group Executive Officer/Deputy Plans Officer, Special Operations Command—Europe, Stuttgart, Germany. 

Young commanded the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Fort Drum, New York from 2021-2023 and 1st Battalion, 4th Security Force Assistance Brigade at Fort Carson, Colorado from 2023-2025.

Young holds a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the United States Military Academy. His military education includes the U.S. Army War College, the Intermediate Level Education Course, the Special Forces Qualification Course, the Maneuver Captains Career Course, and the Engineer Officer Basic Course. 

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2), the Meritorious Service Medal (4), the Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.
