Bruce E. Griggs is the deputy to the garrison commander at U.S. Army Garrison Benelux, headquartered at Chièvres Air Base, Belgium.

Griggs joined the garrison team January 2022. In his current position, he serves as the senior civilian and primary official in support to the garrison commander in providing leadership and program guidance for the integration and delivery of base operations (BASOPS) services, which includes operations, training, mobilization and security; law enforcement, protection, and fire and emergency services; public works; human resources; plans, analysis and integration; resource management; Family and morale, welfare and recreation; postal services; religious support; public affairs; equal opportunity; internal review; and safety. Griggs is responsible for leading an exceptional team of garrison professionals and providing unparalleled service in order to ensure combat-ready Soldiers, quality infrastructure and comprehensive BASOPS support services to U.S. active-duty service members, retirees, civilians (U.S. and host nation), and Family members within Belgium, the Netherlands, and northwestern Germany, comprising the Benelux community.

Grigg’s prior key civilian assignment include serving as the deputy to the garrison commander and as the director simultaneously of both operations (Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security) and emergency services at U.S. Army Garrison Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. He was one of 29 Department of Defense civilians to participate in the two-year DoD Senior Leader Development Program (DSLDP) for strategic leaders, where he completed level II Professional Military Education at the U.S. Naval War College, Rhode Island. He then served in a yearlong experiential assignment as the Navy International Programs Office liaison officer to the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and the commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. He served as the deputy assistant program manager for Maneuver, Office of the Program Manager – Saudi Arabia National Guard; director of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security for USAG Italy; and deputy chief of training for U.S. Army Africa (USARAF).

He is a decorated combat veteran, retiring from the Army in June 2010 after a 24-year career as an Armor and Cavalry officer. His military assignments include a variety of command and staff positions deployed in support of U.S. national security missions in Iraq, Germany, Bosnia-Herzogovina, Kosovo, Saudi Arabia and other theaters / operations around the globe.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the DoD Meritorious Service Medal, five Department of the Army Meritorious Service Medals, four Department of the Army Superior Civilian Service Awards, an Achievement Medal for Civilian Service, a Commander’s Award for Civilian Service, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Staff Identification Badge.

Griggs holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo and a master’s degree from the U.S. Naval War College in national security and strategic studies and from the University of Phoenix in organizational management. He also holds certifications in U.S. Army Strategic Planning, Lean Six Sigma (black belt), knowledge management, and anti-terrorism / force protection program management. He is also an alpine ski patroller with the U.S. National Ski Patrol.
