CSM Garth D. Newell 

CSM Garth Newell is a native of McCleary, Washington. He enlisted in 1996 and attended the Basic Spanish course at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. He was awarded the MOS 35P (then 98G), Signals Intelligence Voice Intercept Operator, from Goodfellow Air Force Base, San Angelo, Texas.

His first assignment was with the 304th Military Intelligence Battalion, 111th Military Intelligence Brigade, at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He attended Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California to learn French and serve as a company Operations NCO. He was then assigned to D co, 101st MI BN, Wurzburg Germany (1st Inf. DIV “Big Red One) as a Prophet Team/Squad Leader and deployed to Iraq as part of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM; This was followed by an assignment to Ft. Lewis, WA, as a SIGINT Platoon Sergeant, in 2-1 Cav, 4th BDE 2nd Inf. DIV and deployed to Iraq; CSM Newell then transferred to the 201st BFSB and served as a 1SG, where he deployed his company to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On his return, CSM Newell was assigned to the 743rd MI BN, Buckley AFB, Aurora Colorado as Deputy SIGINT Mission Director and then the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Operations Director, NSA-Colorado. He attended the Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss Texas, graduating with honors from Class 65 and was selected for and served as Battalion Command Sergeant Major, 532nd MI BN, Camp Humphreys Korea. He was then selected to serve in the Army Cyber Command, Ft. Belvoir, VA as the G2 Sergeant Major. His most recent assignment was as the BDE CSM of the 470th MI BDE Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX.

CSM Newell has held every leadership position from Team Sergeant to First Sergeant to Command Sergeant Major at the battalion and Brigade levels as well as senior enlisted leader in a joint environment. His military education includes Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course, First Sergeant Course, and the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, The Command Sergeants Major Pre-Command Course and the Intelligence Sergeants Major Course. CSM Newell holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management and French from Excelsior College.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Army Superior Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge and the Military Intelligence Corps Association Knowlton Award.

CSM Newell has been married to the former Ms. Julie Shoaf for 29 years and they have 6 sons, ages 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, and 18.
