The White Sands Missile Range STEM Summer Interns met with WSMR Leaders during a breakfast meeting June 8 at the Frontier Club.
WSMR Commander Brig. Gen. Eric Little, WSMR Executive Director Robert Stone, WSMR Test Center Commander Col. Shawn Smart and several Test Center directors met with the seven interns that will be participating in a 10-week program sponsored by Test Resource Management Center (TRMC) under the Department of Defense.
Little welcomed the interns and told them how important it is for them to be here. “We are very happy to have you here and I am very appreciative of the program that TRMC put together.”
“I know you are paired up with mentors who have this tremendous wealth of experience. Tap into that, talk to them, and ask them whatever is on your mind,” Little said. “We’ve got some outstanding engineers and scientists here at WSMR. I think your summer is going to be very rewarding.”
Little also told them that there are tremendous opportunities working for the government as a Department of the Army civilian or contractor.
Stone and Smart also welcomed the interns to the program and gave them advice on how to make the most of their summer.
“We are really happy that you are here so that you can give us that new energy and help us look at old problems in a new way,” Smart said.
Consuelo Ramirez, a senior at UTEP majoring in computer science with a minor in math, said she had been to WSMR as a high school student as part of the GEMS program, Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science. She came back the following year as a mentor for that program and now she is back as a STEM college intern.
