McGruff visits White Sands Missile Range’s School Age Center for safety month

WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. (June 10, 2022) The White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) U.S. Army Garrison Safety team, Amanda Carreras, Employee Assistance Program and Prevention Coordinator for the Army Substance Abuse Program, and McGruff, the Crime Dog, held a visit at the School Age Care Center to discuss safety practices children can us on post.

The short visit consisted of brief presentations from Carreras, and Seth Dyer WSMR U.S. Army Garrison Chief of Safety to children in the School Age Care Center’s gym.

“Unexploded ordinances, or UXO’s, are a huge problem on White Sands Missile Range. These can detonate anywhere on the installation because so much ammunition was dropped for so many years. Today we are teaching the three R’s program to the children which is a Department of Army Corps of Engineers program. The three R’s stand for recognize, retreat, report UXO’s if you see them,” said Dyer.

The safety team stresses these very important actions you must take if you come across a UXO:

Recognize - when you may have encountered a munition and that munitions are dangerous.
Retreat - do not approach, touch, move or disturb it, but carefully walk away at least 100 yards.
Report - call 575-678-1234 and your supervisor to report it, include what you saw and where you saw it, do not call while close to the UXO as close range cell phone signals can detonate them.

“We were invited to the School Age Care Center along with the safety team for their 101 Days of Summer safety program. McGruff’s purpose in today’s visit is to provide prevention and awareness to child abduction, robbery, saying no to drugs and alcohol, as well as antibullying both online and offline,” said Carreras.

At the end of the presentation, Carreras and the safety team handed out cards and coloring books illustrating best safety practices while the children interacted with McGruff.
