White Sands School celebrates being named Blue Ribbon School

White Sands School held an assembly to celebrate its designation as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education for high achievement Nov. 21 in the school auditorium.

The celebration honored stakeholders in the school's success: teachers, staff, administrators, students, parents, and the White Sands Missile Range community both military and civilian.

School Principal James Dickerson welcomed guests and thanked the Las Cruces Public Schools’ board members and the Organ Mountain High School band for their participation.

“We are here today because our school has received the National Blue Ribbon School Award from the U.S. Department of Education for high achievement.”

“One thing all Blue Ribbon Schools have in common is they showcase effective teaching methods and offer professional development for their staff. Data driven instruction is practiced throughout the school and there is an effort schoolwide to ensure that all students succeed,” Dickerson said.

“Collaboration between families, the community, and educators is a key component to our success.”

Dickerson went on to say that only 356 schools in the U.S. received this award and White Sands School was one of three in New Mexico to receive the award.

WSMR Commander Brig. Gen. George Turner said that today we celebrate White Sands School as one of the best schools in the United States.

“Today we shine a spotlight on the Sun Chiefs’ high academic achievement, hard work and dedication.”

“This Blue Ribbon tells the world that our students have the opportunity to succeed in an environment that respects each child for who he or she is,” Turner said.

Arsenio Romero, former secretary of the New Mexico Public Education Department, said that through the years he has continued to see excellence from White Sands School.

Romero recognized parents and community members for their support to the school. He also thanked Dickerson and Turner.

“This school is a model of what we want all schools to be like,” Romero said.

Las Cruces Public Schools Superintendent Ignacio Ruiz said it was with great pride that he stood before everyone to celebrate this truly extraordinary achievement.

“When you think about the recognition of White Sands School as a National Blue Ribbon School the prestigious honors is not just a title, it is a reflection of the hard work and commitment to excellence demonstrated by our entire school community,” Ruiz said.

The Organ Mountain High School band was invited to perform the national anthem and a couple of other musical numbers during the event to the delight of those in attendance.

At the end of the ceremony teachers received a Blue Ribbon pin and students enjoyed a cookie before heading back to class.
