Hockey Slap Shot Challenge

Mike Edmonston, an Equal Employment Opportunity Specialist at White Sands Missile Range, spent the evening of Aug. 23 blocking pucks during a Hockey Slap Shot Challenge event at Bell Gym sponsored by Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation.

WSMR Families came out to give the challenge a shot and to see if they could get one by Edmonston.

Born in Montreal, Canada, Edmonston, said he has been playing hockey since 1973. He played nationally for a team out of New Jersey. He said they were national champions. Now he plays for local teams.

“I decided to put this together for MWR and let the kids shoot and have fun in an effort to bring more people into the gym,” he said.

Erin Nicholson, a participant, said it is good to see these types of events on post to encourage young children to get out into the community and try sports like hockey.

You still have a chance to try the challenge. Come out to Bell Gym on Aug. 25 and 27 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and challenge a professional hockey goalie.

If you successfully score a goal you will receive a free sports and fitness punch card and various autographed prizes.

Open to all DoD card holders. Register by calling or visiting the Bell Gym front desk at (575) 678-3374.
