White Sands School held it’s annual First Day of School Holiday July 17 to help get students ready for the new school year.
WSMR Garrison Commander Col. David Mitchell welcomed students and parents to the event.
“Welcome to the new school year,” Mitchell said. “This is a great event to kick off the school year.”
Mitchell thanked WSS Principal James Dickerson and the staff for another great FDOSH.
“I wish you all the best of luck in the next year,” Mitchell said to the students. “Stay focused and listen to your teachers.”
Dickerson welcomed everyone to the event and thanked all the event supporters for their contributions before introducing all the teachers.
“The FDOSH brings us all together as one community. We highly value our partnerships with White Sands Missile Range and its multiple agencies,” Dickerson said. “The White Sands staff is looking forward to working collaborately with all the White Sands community to assist each student and maximize their potential and achievement.”
Students and parents were able to get key information on the upcoming schoolyear and picked up free backpacks and school supplies.
Child and Youth Services also provided information on their before and after school programs and students got a chance to meet their teachers.
Desiree Miller who has a five-year old attending White Sands School this year was at the FDOSH event.
“It is awesome that they do this,” Miller said. She said this was her first time attending the event and her son was excited about meeting his teacher.
Stephanie Herrera, who also has a five-year old attending White Sands School this year, said she enjoyed the event.
“I think it is nice that they are doing this for the community and the kids. I am really impressed.”
Students also got a chance to visit booths in the school’s front lawn where several WSMR organizations gave out information and passed out various school related supplies.
