LTC Zachary David Brainard

 
 

LTC Brainard graduated from Fordham University and commissioned into the Chemical Corps through New York City Army ROTC in 2004. His first assignment was with the 2-77 Field Artillery battalion, where he served as the BN CBRN Officer and deployed to Iraq as a platoon leader in Alpha Battery. After the CBRN Captains Career Course in 2007, LTC Brainard went to the Republic of Korea (ROK) and served as the BDE CBRN officer for the 501st SBDE, commander of the 38th Chemical Detachment (Joint Assessment Team), and as the commander of the 4th Chemical Company.

 

In January of 2010, LTC Brainard was assigned to the 22d CBRNE BN where he held multiple positions, including CBRNE Response Team (CRT) Leader and then as the commander of C/22, transitioning the unit to the 25th CBRNE Co (TE).

 

In February of 2015, he returned to the ROK as the CBRN officer for the 2nd Infantry Division at was then assigned to the 23d CBRNE BN to serve as the S3 and XO.

 

In June of 2018, LTC Brainard was assigned to Special Operations Command, Pacific (SOCPAC as the lead CBRN/CWMD Planner, CBRN/CWMD Building Partnership Capacity Manager, and the CMWD Cross Functional Team (CFT) Lead.

 

In May of 2021 LTC Brainard took the position of Deputy Brigade Commander for the 48th CBRN Brigade at Fort Hood, TX. Then, on June 15, 2022, he assumed command of the 2D Chemical Battalion at Fort Hood, TX.

 

After command, LTC Brainard will attend the Senior Service College as an Army Fellow at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies in Monterey, CA.

 

LTC Brainard holds a BS in Business Administration from Fordham University, a MS in Environmental Management from Webster University, and has completed various military training programs to include: Defense Support to Civil Authorities Phases 1 & 2, HAZMAT Incident Command, Field Management of Chemical and Biological Casualties Course, Technical Escort, Air Assault, Joint CBRN Planners Course, the Joint Forces Staff Collage, and the Army War College.

 

His awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal (2 Bronze Service Stars), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon (Numeral 3), German Armed Forces Efficiency Badge (Gold), and the Air Assault Badge.
