CSM Stephen R. Nielson is a native of Riverside, California. He enlisted in the United States Army in March 1993 as an armored reconnaissance specialist and graduated One Station Unit Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. CSM Nielson’s previous duty assignments include D Troop, 5th Squadron, 15th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Knox, Kentucky; A Troop, 5th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, Camp Garry Owen, Republic of South Korea, C Troop, 1st Squadron, 16th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Knox, Kentucky; A Troop, 1st Squadron, and F Troop, 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado; B Troop, 4th Squadron, 7th U.S. Cavalry, Republic of South Korea; B Company, 2nd Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, Fort Knox, Kentucky; Headquarters and Headquarters Troop and M Troop, 4th Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany; Senior Military Science Instructor University of Colorado Boulder; Alumni of Class 66 United States Sergeants Major Academy; 1st Battalion, 81st Armor Battalion, Fort Benning Georgia; 5th Squadron, 15th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia; and a Facilitator for the Battalion Command Sergeants Major Development Program, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. CSM Nielson’s combat tours of duty include two tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and two tours in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. CSM Nielson’s Military education includes the Basic Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Senior Leader Course, First Sergeant/Commander Course, Sergeant Major Academy (Class 66), United States Drill Sergeants Academy, Army Basic Instructor Course, SBCT Leader Course, Pathfinder Course; and Master Resilience Trainer Course. CSM Nielson has been married to his wife, Sarah, for the past 25 years, and has two sons, Tristan (20) and Liam (16).
