Major General James M. Smith

Deputy Commanding General, Installation Management Command

Major General James M. Smith is a native of Hampton, Virginia. He commissioned into the United States Army in 1992 from Christopher Newport University, Newport News, Virginia where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration (concentration in Accounting). His military education includes: the Chemical Officer Basic Course, the Combined Logistics Officer Advanced Course, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, the School of Advanced Military Studies, and the United States Marine Corps War College. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Webster University, a Master of Science in Logistics Management from Florida Institute of Technology, a Master of Theater Operations from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from the Marine Corps War College.

Maj. Gen. Smith's command assignments include:  Director of Operations for the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Kaiserslautern, Germany; 31st Chief of Transportation/Commandant, Unites States Army Transportation School, Interim President, Army Logistics University, Fort Lee, Virginia; 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; 599th Transportation Brigade, Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, Wheeler Army Airfield, Hawaii; 215th Brigade Support Battalion, 3d Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas and OPERATION NEW DAWN, Iraq; and B Company, 701st Maintenance Support Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, US Army Europe. 

Other significant assignments include:  Executive Officer to the Commander, U. S. Transportation Command, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois; Colonel Assignments Manager/Branch Chief, Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army, Washington DC; Lieutenant Colonel Assignment Officer, later Deputy Chief, Force Sustainment Division, Officer Personnel Management Directorate, US Army Human Resources Command, Alexandria, Virginia; Logistics Planner, Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, later Executive Officer, 615th Aviation Support Battalion, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood Texas, and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, Iraq; and Combat Developer, Information Systems Directorate, Combined Arms Support Command, Fort Lee and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, Kuwait and Iraq.

Maj. Gen. Smith has completed multiple deployments in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and OPERATION NEW DAWN, Iraq. His awards and decorations include: the Army Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (2 OLC), Bronze Star Medal (1 OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (1 SOLC), Army Commendation Medal (3 OLC), Army Achievement Medal, the Parachutist Badge, and the Army Staff Identification Badge.
