CSM Matthew Reed

Command Sergeant Major Matt Reed is a native of York, PA where he enlisted in the Army and completed One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, GA as and 11B Infantryman.
CSM Reed trained and led Soldiers in a variety of light and airborne assignments throughout FORSCOM, TRADOC, and USARCENT, including tours as a Ranger Instructor at 4th Ranger Training Battalion and ROTC Instructor at Hampton University. CSM Reed dedicated 51 months as the First Sergeant for three companies: a rifle company and dismounted reconnaissance troop with 1st Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, and as the Brigade HHC First Sergeant for Area Support Group-Qatar. Most recently, he served as the U.S. Army’s Senior Enlisted Leader at the Virginia Military Institute, transforming college students into Officers at the largest ROTC program in the Nation.
CSM Reed’s other assignments include Brigade S3 NCOIC and Brigade Air NCOIC, 1st Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division; Platoon Sergeant, 1-504th Parachute Infantry Regiment; Platoon Sergeant, Squad Leader, Team Leader, and Machine Gunner, 1-71st Cavalry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division; Team Leader and Grenadier, United Nations Command Honor Guard Company, Yongson, South Korea.
CSM Reed’s military education includes all levels of the NCOPDS and he is a graduate of the Sergeants Major Academy (Class 69). He also completed Airborne, Jumpmaster, and the 82nd’s Master Jumpmaster Course; Pathfinder; Ranger School; Mountain Leader Advanced Rifle Marksmanship; Army Basic Instructor Course, Tactics Certification Course, and the Ranger Instructor Certification Program; the U.S. Air Force’s Joint Firepower Controller Course; First Sergeant’s Course; Master Resilience Trainer; Battle Staff NCO; Senior ROTC Pre-Command Course; Common Faculty Development-Instructor Course; and the Battalion Pre-Command Course. Educationally, CSM Reed holds a Bachelor in Business Management, a Masters of Defense and Strategic Studies from the University of Texas at El Paso, and he is nearly complete a Master of Business Administration from UNC’s top-ranked Kenan-Flagler Business School.
CSM Reed’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2), Meritorious Service Medal (5), Army Commendation Medal (7), Army Achievement Medal (3), Army Good Conduct Medal (6), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan and Iraq Campaign Medals, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, Korean Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (5), Overseas Service Ribbon (5), NATO Metal, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and Army Superior Unit Award. He’s earned the Expert Infantryman Badge; Combat Infantryman Badge; Basic, Senior, and Master Parachutist Wings; the Pathfinder Badge, and the coveted Ranger Tab. CSM Reed is the recipient of foreign parachutist wings from Chile, Brazil, Australia, Italy, and France.
CSM Reed is married to his beautiful wife, Christina, and he has four children: Emalyn (11), Benjamin (9), Jack (6), and Claire (2).
