Fort Riley Garrison Commander Colonel William B. McKannay

Colonel Will McKannay was appointed as Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Riley, July 16, 2020. Col. McKannay is a recent graduate of the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he studied for one year beginning Summer, 2019. During his previous 25 years of service, he has served in a variety of professionally rewarding, broadening and developmental positions across the Army and Joint Forces in both the generating and operating force.


His previous command and staff assignments include, Battalion Commander, Benning Criminal Investigation Battalion, Fort Benning, GA, (Area of Operations (AO) included Southeastern US and SOUTHCOM AO) from 2017 to 2019; Deputy Brigade Commander of 8th Military Police (MP) Brigade and DES, U.S. Army Hawaii, from 2015 to 2017; Deputy and successively Chief of Policy and Plans Division, Office of the Provost Marshal General (OPMG), The Pentagon, from 2013-2015; Principal Advisor to the Afghan National Army MP Division Commander and staff, Bagram and Parwan, Afghanistan, from 2012-2013; Operations Officer and Executive Officer for 91st MP Battalion, Fort Drum, NY, and with TF Haiti (2011) from 2009-2012; Military Working Dog and Law Enforcement Personnel (LEP) Program Manager, OPMG, The Pentagon, from 2007-2008; Joint Staff Intern, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, The Pentagon, from 2006-2007; Company Commander, 630thMP CO, Bamberg, Germany and Baghdad, Fallujah, and Mosul, Iraq from 2003-2005; Assistant Operations Officer, 793rdMP BN, Bamberg Germany and Kosovo, from 2002-2003; Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of the MP Corps Regiment, US Army MP School, Fort Leonard Wood, MO, from 2000-2002; Platoon Leader, 204thMP CO, 519thMP BN, Fort Polk, LA, and Honduras from 1998-2000; prior to commissioning, he served multiple assignments as an enlisted Infantry and Engineer Soldier in Germany and California.


In 1995, he received a Green to Gold ROTC Scholarship and subsequently graduated from Northern Arizona University in 1997 with a degree in criminology and was commissioned into the MP Corps Regiment. He has Master Degrees in Public Policy from Georgetown University and Business and Management from Webster University. His professional military education includes MP Officer Basic, MP Career Course, Combined Arms Services and Staff School, United Kingdom Advanced Command and Staff Course, and the National Defense University’s Joint Combined Warfighter School.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (1 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), Joint Commendation Medal (1OLC), Joint, Army and Navy Meritorious Unit Awards, the Combat Action and Expert Infantryman’s Badges, German Efficiency Badge, Parachutist Badge, and the Order of the Marechaussee (Bronze).
