This guide page is your introduction to the joint military environment in the National Capital Region as you get acquainted with the services and facilities that will make you feel at home. You are serving at the center of the nation’s treasure, wrapped in the history of yesterday and poised for the innovations of tomorrow. There are very few service-unique functions at JBM-HH. If a function can be shared, and it is in the best interests of those served to do so, the function is shared. Both services maintain the traditions and unique history that speak “Soldier” and “Marine.” JBM-HH is located in Virginia on the Myer and Henderson Hall Campuses and in Washington, D.C. on the McNair Campus.

WHAT'S NEW?
- The Army increased reimbursement for personally procured moves (PPMs) to 100% of the estimated cost the government would pay a moving company as well as fuel surcharges or allowances for bulky items like motorcycles or hot-tubs. This provides Soldiers and civilians more scheduling flexibility and an option to avoid contact with outside agencies. Note: funded orders and weight tickets are required.
- To enable better forecasting and scheduling, the Army now requires PCS orders to be provided 120 days before report dates.
- During a PCS move, Soldiers can claim per diem allowance for meals and incidentals up to seven days without receipts. If pickups or deliveries are missed during a PCS move, Soldiers may claim per diem allowance for meals and incidentals up to seven days without receipts. DPMO Inconvenience Claims Fact Sheet
- The claim notification deadline has been increased from 75 to 180 days after delivery to identify any loss or damage, with the choice to repair or receive full repair costs.
- Moving companies are being held accountable for their services. The Army posts moving company customer satisfaction survey scores on the Defense Personal Property System customer page. Soldiers and civilians will receive survey invitations via text or email and can complete the survey online. Survey responses provide valuable feedback on both government and industry services that we use to improve processes and maintain accountability.

HOUSING FAQs
Q1. What are the housing options for folks assigned to Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall?
A1. Family Housing at JBM-HH consists of 88 historic dwelling units on the Myer and McNair Campuses. Family housing is very limited, and although all officer quarters are designated for key and essential positions, there are limited quantities of enlisted quarters available on a first-come, first-served basis. To speak to a housing representative and/or be placed on the waiting list for Enlisted Quarters, please call the Family Housing Manager at: 703-696-0937 or 703-696-9611. The Rental Partnership Program provides savings to military personnel at many rental apartments in the National Capital Region. For more information, visit Building 205 or call: 703-696-9611/3559. For more information on other off-base options, please visit the Army Housing Online User Services Website.
Q2. What transportation options are there for me to get to Myer or McNair?
A2. Driving around Arlington County and southwest D.C. can be quite daunting. Arlington County has a great transportation page that shares some great ideas about getting to the installation, including the Metro Bus, ride share programs, and bicycles. https://www.arlingtonva.us/Government/Programs/Transportation. For the McNair campus, the Navy Yard Metro stop is a short walk around Nationals Park to the installation. Check out this Metro map for more info: https://www.wmata.com/schedules/maps/
Q3. How do I gauge distance and traffic in the northern Virginia and D.C. area?
A3. It’s no secret that traffic can get pretty bad in and around Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. A trip that should take 15 minutes can often take an hour when traffic conditions are at its worst. It is always recommended to use a travel app when getting around (Waze, Google Maps) to find the best routes. Also, using the HOV lanes is an option, though it can be quite expensive if you travel in the vehicle alone. You will need an E-Z Pass transponder from https://www.vdot.virginia.gov/projects/major-projects/64expresslanes/using-the-lanes/e-zpass/. You can also Slug, which is a one-of-a-kind community system here in the DC area. Here is a great site that discusses slugging in more detail. https://slug-lines.org/about-slugging/.
Q4. Where do people live around here?
A4. People travel from all over Virginia and Maryland to get to Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. The adage is the farther away from DC you live, the more “house” you get for your money. However, the farther away you live from the installation, the longer it takes for you to get to work every day. A trip from Woodbridge, Va. on I-95/395 can take 90 minutes (or more) if you leave during the morning rush, so choosing the right place to live, within your budget is key. The Joint Base Housing Office can help you select the right area by calling 703-696-9611/3559 or try the Army Housing Online User Services at https://www.housing.army.mil/#!pg=post&sp=programs.
Q5. Where do I go to figure out BAH in the DC area?
A5. The best place to find BAH rates in the DC area is to go to https://www.travel.dod.mil/Portals/119/Documents/BAH/BAH_Rates_All_Locations_All_Pay_Grades/PDF-Excel/2025_BAH_Rates.pdf and look for either Myer or McNair, depending on your work location.
Q6. Can you recommend a good site to help find housing in the area?
A6. Outside of the Army Housing Online User Services Website, you can use https://www.militarybyowner.com/ or the Automated Housing Referral Network https://www.ahrn.com/. You can also always call the JBM-HH Housing Office at 703-696-9611/3559.
Q7. How do you pick up an automobile if you are stationed at JBM-HH?
A7. Generally, POVs will be picked up near Fort Belvoir. For more information about picking up your POV, call the Transportation Management Office at 703-614-7190 or visit https://www.militaryonesource.mil/moving-pcs/plan-to-move/pcs-and-military-moves/.
Q8. Where is a safe place to buy an automobile in the area?
A8. There are many pitfalls when buying a new vehicle, especially if you are a new service member to the installation. USAA.com has a good article about what to keep in mind when buying a vehicle. https://www.usaa.com/advice/how-to-buy-a-car/?akredirect=true. Make sure you do your research at Cars.com, Autotrader.com or KBB.com, ask your leadership if you have any questions, and don’t sign anything unless you are 100% sure. Carfax or AutoCheck can help you check the vehicle history. Also want to do a VINCheck with VINCheck® system to make sure the vehicle’s VIN number hasn’t been salvaged.
Q9. Does JBM-HH have a Lending Closet?
A9. The Joint Base provides personalized relocation assistance to incoming and outgoing personnel. The program helps to reduce the stress of moving by offering services such as the Lending Closet, Welcome Packets, multicultural services and sponsorship training. In addition, we have programs designed for waiting Families of deployed sponsors. Assistance is available for Families PCSing to or from Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in the form of basic household items such as pots and pans, dishes, car seats, high chairs, sleeping mats, etc. Items can be loaned out for up to 30 days at a time. Linens and towels are not provided. Call 703-696-3510 for more information.
Q10. Does the Joint Base have a ride-share program?
A10. The Joint Base is currently working with Uber to start a ride-share program on both the Myer and McNair campus. The goal is to start the program by the end of FY25. Stay tuned for more information.
Q11. Will the SJA help with leases/legal questions?
A11. The Military District of Washington Office of the Staff Judge Advocate provides free legal counseling and document preparation and is available by appointment to active duty and retired service members and their families. Legal subjects covered include most types of civilian legal issues such as wills, divorce, child support, child custody, car contracts, landlord/tenant issues, real estate and military administrative matters.

Fee Assistance buys down the higher cost of off post care allowing eligible Families to pay fees comparable to those charged at the Installation.
