EU Entry/Exit System (EES) Information
Important Information Regarding Entry into Italy and the EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
Effective October 12, 2025, EU countries began using the Entry-Exit System (EES). The EES is a new EU automated system designed to register non-EU nationals crossing the external borders of participating countries for short stays. To ensure a smooth entry process for those assigned in Italy, particularly for military families, please follow these guidelines for both official and personal travel (including leave):
- All Family Members: Carry all relevant and unexpired travel documents, including tourist passports.
- Service Members: Use your NATO orders and military ID for entry. If you currently do not have NATO orders, contact your command admin department to generate one. If you are facing resistance in obtaining one, elevate the issue through your chain of command for resolution.
- Dependents/Civilians: Use your Italian “Permesso di Soggiorno” (Sojourner Permit).
- Entry Procedure: When entering Italy, choose the line that allows you to talk to a border control agent. Do NOT use the electronic kiosk that requires you to enter answer tourism information questions. At some airports, this is a Resident line; at others, you may be using a line for Diplomats, Official Travelers, or Military/NATO. Remember, you are not tourists; you live and (in most cases) work in Italy.
Important Note about the EES: If you register in EES, you will be incorrectly flagged you as overstaying your allowed time in Italy the next time you travel outside of Italy and attempt to re-enter. While the EES will not be fully implemented in all EU countries until April 2026, please start practicing this entry procedure now to avoid potential issues in the future.
