Fall & Winter Safety & Vigilance
As we enter the fall and winter holiday season, seasonal markets, school breaks, and increased travel present exciting opportunities—along with crowded venues, reduced daylight, and heightened security risks. Force protection and personal safety are shared community responsibilities. Please review these essential guidelines before holiday travel and events:
1. Public Outings & Situational Awareness
  • Blend In: Avoid clothing, accessories, or behaviors that highlight you as American or military-affiliated.
  • Crowd Safety: Stay alert in transit hubs, religious sites, and holiday markets. Visit during non-peak hours when possible and move quickly through security checkpoints.
  • Family Rally Point: Agree on an emergency meeting spot and communication plan prior to entering crowded events.
  • Avoid Demonstrations: Steer clear of protests and political rallies. If encountered, leave the area immediately—do not stay to watch or record.
2. Smart Travel & Clearances
  • Advisory Restrictions: Avoid leisure travel to areas experiencing active armed conflict, civil unrest, or U.S. State Department Level 3/4 travel advisories (e.g., portions of the Middle East and Africa).
  • Service Member Approvals: Military personnel must register international leave through required unit and theater clearance channels (APACS) prior to departure.
  • Stay Connected: Share itineraries and lodging details with unit sponsors, staff duty, or trusted family members; check in regularly.
3. Digital Habits & OPSEC
  • Post After You Return: Never post real-time countdowns, flight updates, or live vacation check-ins. Advertising an empty home or current location creates security vulnerabilities.
  • Device Hygiene: Disable public location sharing and automatic GPS geotagging on photos and social media apps.
  • Guard Unit Details: Never discuss deployment dates, field exercises, or operational schedules in public or online forums.
4. Training, Base Defense, & Reporting
  • AT Level I Currency: All military personnel must be current on Antiterrorism Level I training prior to taking holiday leave or pass. Families are encouraged to review basic awareness principles.
  • Drone Watch: Drones are strictly forbidden over military installations and housing. Immediately report any unauthorized drone sightings to the Military Police (MP).
  • If You See Something, Say Something:
    • Immediate Response: Local MP Desk +39-0444-71-5300 or host-nation emergency services (112 in Europe).
    • Incident Reporting: Theater channels (JARVISS360 and Sentinel).
    • Counterintelligence / Suspicious Contacts:  24 hour duty agent +39-366-830-4950 or iSALUTE portal.
Holiday Quick-Check
  • Emergency numbers (MP Desk, Unit Staff Duty, 112) are saved in all family cell phones.
  • Phone location/geotagging disabled; social media sharing held until after return.
  • Travel clearances submitted (military) and itinerary shared with sponsor.
  • AT Level I training completed and verified.

 

 
EU Entry/Exit System (EES) & DoW Travel Exemption
On 1 April 2026, the European Union (EU) fully implemented its new automated biometric Entry/ExitSystem (EES), used for registering non-EU nationals traveling for a Short Stay (90 days within any 180-day period), each time they cross the external borders of any of the 29 European countries using the system.  Exemptions from EES registration have been made to include Servicemembers, Civilians and their Command Sponsored Dependents traveling on NATO or Partnership for Peace business. 1. “DoW Servicemembers, DA Civilians, Contractors and their Command Sponsored Dependents on NATO Assignments in Europe are EXEMPT from EES requirements under existing International Agreements”.  Exempt Travelers MUST NOT Register in EES!
 
2. Upon arrival to ANY OF THE 29 COUNTRY BORDER CHECKS, state the following to immigration officials: "I am a United States Department of War traveler on official orders. As such, I am exempt from EES requirements per applicable international agreements."
 
3. Exempt Travelers MUST Plan Ahead! Border checks have resulted in longer customs lines and may delay follow-on arrival events!
 
4.To ensure exemption and avoid travel delays, Personnel must travel with documents as identified in the Electronic Foreign Clearance Guidance for Italy. See QR Code below for full details.
 
 
5. ALL Personnel on Leisure Travel will use Tourist Passports. Travelers must be prepared to bring ALL travel documents listed above to show NATO mission status if requested at border check.
 
6. Department of War (DoW) Servicemembers, DA Civilians, Contractors and their Command Sponsored Dependents arriving at the VENICE MARCO POLO AIRPORT will proceed to “Visa D” Line. See photos below.

USAG Italy assigned/attached members erroneously registered in EES may request removal by scanning QR Code for pre-drafted email to the Vicenza Passport Office (usarmy.usag-italyusag.mbx.ees-de-registration@army.mil).  Request must include information for each traveler in party as listed below.
