Commander Biography

Lt. Col. Carlos Poventud-Estrada enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Private First Class in 1993 into the 673th Quartermaster Co. as Mortuary Affairs Specialist (57F), became a Noncommission Officer in 1997, promoted to Staff Sergeant in 1999, mobilized with the 311th Mortuary Affairs Co. for operation Noble Eagle after the attack to our nation on Sept. 11, 2001 to support with the recovery of remains & personal effects at the Pentagon.

Lt. Col. Poventud-Estrada commissioned as a Signal Officer Oct. 4, 2002 and became a platoon leader and executive officer for C Co., 35th Signal Battalion and commanded C Co. 35th Signal Battalion from January 2005 until February 2007.  He deployed as the commander of the 4th Detachment, 35th Integrated Theater Signal Battalion in July 2007 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom until June 2008. He then joined the 2-348th Training Support Battalion as Observer/Controller-Trainer. On August 2010, he became the
Logistics Officer of the S4 for the 210th Regional Support Group (RSG). On February 2012, became the commander for the HHD 210th RSG until June 2014, then became the executive officer for the 77th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB) on July 2014 and for the 393rd CSSB in July 2015 until June 2016 when he became the commander of the 346th Transportation Battalion until August 2017. Lt. Col. Poventud-Estrada became the Support Operations Officer for the 346th Transportation Battalion and participated on the Defense Support to Civil Authorities Operations supporting the recovery after the devastation of hurricanes Irma and Maria in Puerto Rico until Nov 2017. In Dec 2017, he was assigned to the US Army Reserve Command G-33 at Ft. Liberty as Global Force Management Strategic Concept Planner for his first tour as AGR until May 12, 2021. He served as the Assistant Chief of Staff for the 1st Mission Support Command before assuming command of Devens Reserve Forces Training Area Garrison July 12, 2023.

Lt. Col. Poventud-Estrada earned a bachelor's in science of electrical engineering from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) in 1996, registered as a Professional Engineer in 2004, earned a Master of Science (Physics) in 2009 and a Philosophy Doctorate in Chemical Physics from the UPR in 2014 conducting research on the effects of microgravity in electrochemical reactions with NASA Ames Research Center. He graduated from the Signal Officer Basic Course, Signal Captains Career Course, Reserve Component Theater Sustainment Course, Support Operations Course, and the Command and General Staff Officer Common Core and Advance Operations Course. He is currently enrolled in Senior Service College with the U.S. Army War College Distance Education Program class
2025.


Lt. Col. Poventud-Estrada is happily married to Paola Escoriaza since 1993 and has four children: Paola Isabel, Carlos Andres, Noheli Enid (Daughter-in-Law) and their son Carlos Mateo (grandson).
