Fort Sill's Transition Assistance Program is the Army’s structured transition program for Soldiers moving from military service into civilian life. It is required by law and designed to help eligible service members prepare for employment, education, vocational training or entrepreneurship after the Army. For commanders, it is not a courtesy or a last-minute out-processing task. It is a commander’s program and a leadership responsibility.
Under current guidance, most separating Soldiers are required to begin TAP no later than 365 days before separation, while retirees should start as early as possible within 24 months of retirement. The Army recommends engagement even earlier, generally 18 months before separation and 24 months before retirement, because some of the most valuable opportunities in transition take time to prepare for and approve.
