COL. Michael A. Sapp
COL Sapp, a Kansas native, was commissioned in the U.S. Army, Military Intelligence (MI) Corps, with a branch detail to Armor upon graduation in 1999 from the United States Military Academy. After Armor Officer Basic Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky, he was assigned to 1st Armored Division at Ray Barracks, in Friedberg, Germany, where he served as a tank platoon leader, Assistant Battalion S2, and Battalion S1. As platoon leader, he deployed to Camp Able Sentry, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, in support of KFOR.
He then attended MI Transition and Captain’s Career Courses and Electronic Warfare and Signals Intelligence Course at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Next, he was assigned to Fort Hood, Texas, where he served as a III Corps G2 Plans and Exercise Officer, a 4th Infantry Division G2 Operations Officer, Fires Brigade S2, and 4th Brigade Combat Team MI Company Commander. His assignments included two deployments in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM as the U.S. Military Intelligence representative and staff trainer for 1st Battalion, New Iraqi Army, 2003-2004, and as company commander, 2005-2006.
His follow-on tour was at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York, on the Superintendent’s staff His duties included Chief of Intelligence, Counterintelligence Coordinating Authority, Deputy Chief of Operations, and Protocol Officer-in-Charge. After graduate school at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, and completing the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, COL Sapp joined the 8th Military Police Brigade at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, where he served as Brigade S2.
COL Sapp then returned to Maryland, this time as a Director’s Fellow within the National Security Agency/Central Security Service (NSA/CSS). Afterwards, he served in the Chief of Staff and the Operations Directorates, separated by an individual deployment to the United Nations mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) as the G2 of the military component. COL Sapp then commanded the 297th Military Intelligence Battalion (Operations) at Fort Gordon, Georgia, before attending the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Most recently, COL Sapp served as the Deputy NSA/CSS Representative to US Central Command in Tampa, Florida.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, UN Medal, NATO Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Superior Unit Award, and the Army Air Assault Badge. His civilian education includes a Bachelor of Computer Science Engineering with a double major in German and Spanish, a Master of Information Management, and a Master of Strategic Studies.
COL Sapp and his wife of 22 years, Heather, have three children.
