Command Sgt. Maj. Shawn F. Carns

Command Sergeant Major Shawn F. Carns is the I Corps command sergeant major at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. 

Command Sergeant Major Carns enlisted in the Army in July 1992 as an Infantryman from Indiana, Pennsylvania. He has served in every key leadership position in the infantry from team leader to command sergeant major. After completion of Basic and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Calvary Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas. He has served as team leader and squad leader with the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; long range surveillance team leader, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Hovey, South Korea; Ranger Instructor at 4th Ranger Training Battalion, Fort Benning; platoon sergeant and later first sergeant with the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado. Command Sergeant Major Carns participated in three deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Upon graduation from the Sergeants Major Course, Command Sergeant Major Carns served as the operations sergeant major for 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy, in which he deployed to Afghanistan from June 2012 to February 2013 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In January 2014, he was selected as the battalion command sergeant major for the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, Fort Stewart, Georgia. In June 2016, he was selected as the brigade command sergeant major for Joint Task Force-B in Honduras, and then assigned as the Command Sergeant Major Development Program lead at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Upon departing Fort Leavenworth, Command Sergeant Major Carns served as the command senior enlisted leader, Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa. Following that assignment, he was the 2nd Infantry Division command sergeant major in South Korea. He became the I Corps command sergeant major May 2, 2022.

Command Sergeant Major Carns’ military education includes all noncommissioned officer education system courses. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeant Major Academy (Nonresident 39). His additional military training include Ranger School, Airborne School, Jumpmaster, Pathfinder, Air Movement Operations, Instructor/Facilitator course and Battle Staff. Command Sergeant Major Carns also received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Leadership (Management) from Trident University, in Cypress, California, in June 2019.

Command Sergeant Major Carns’ awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Joint Meritorious Unit Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct Medal – ninth award, National Defense Service Medal – second award, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with two stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon – fifth award, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon – sixth Award, NATO Medal, Ranger Tab, Combat Infantry Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Master Parachutists Badge and South Korean Jump Wings.

Command Sergeant Major Carns is married to Theresa Carns and has two children.
