The Transition Assistance Program is mandated by the Department of Defense and provides information and training to ensure transitioning Soldiers, Department of the Army Civilians, retirees, veterans, Soldiers’ Family members, and caregivers are prepared for their next step in life when leaving the Army – whether pursuing additional education, finding a job in the public or private sector, or starting their own business.  The Transition Assistance Program helps assist eligible personnel make informed decisions through benefits counseling, career preparation, and employment assistance to provide a successful transition.

  • Mandatory Requirement: Mandatory for all Soldiers serving 180+ continuous days on active duty, to include Reserve Component members on Title 10 orders.

    Strict 1-Year Minimum: Must start no later than 365 days before separation (up to 24 months for retirees, 18 months for ETS).

    First Steps:

  • Register and complete the Enterprise Individualized Self-Assessment at https://armytap.appsplatformportals.us.
  • Upon completion, contact our TAP office to get scheduled for the Individualized Initial Counseling.
  • Initial and Pre-Separation Counseling must be completed no later than 365 days prior to separation date.
  • Career Readiness Standards (CRS): Must complete specific deliverables depending on Tier level.

    Capstone Sign-Off: Commander (or designee) verifies all CRS requirements are met and signs DD Form 2648 NLT 90 days prior to separation.

    Chapters, REFRAD and Soldiers in IDES Process: Commanders must ensure these Soldiers begin TAP at the earliest available opportunity.

    Pre-Deployment Rule: Soldiers who deploy and will have less than 12 months remaining on active duty upon redeployment are required to initiate TAP before they deploy.

    Continuing TAP Services:

  • Active duty Soldiers and their eligible family members may participate in TAP services up to 365 days following their release from active duty.
  • Retirees (to include medical retirees), Veterans, and Soldiers who did not retire but had 180 days or more of Active Service may participate in the TAP on a space-A basis for life.
