Reading Program

COMMANDANT’S READING PROGRAM

“If you haven’t read hundreds of books, you are functionally illiterate, and you will be incompetent because your personal experiences alone aren’t broad enough to sustain you.” Former Secretary of Defense and Retired U.S. Marine Corps General, James N. Mattis.

Three critical factors must be addressed in our continuing competence as Dragon Soldiers – institutional training, practical experience within units and self-development. One of the key components of self-development is professional reading. Professional reading builds as independent basis of knowledge upon which to form opinions and make judgements. It allows leaders to leverage the experiences and study of others when facing novel situations. Professional reading will continue to be vital as Soldiers maintain the initiative of today and prepare for an uncertain tomorrow. The Commandant’s Reading Program consists of some well-known military art and science professional materials. It also includes a series of products focused on weapons of mass destruction from many historical events as well as old favorites and emerging leadership materials. These products include books, videos, articles, films, talks and speeches.

CRITICAL THINKING EXERCISES
The below critical thinking exercises are intended to assist in facilitating a fruitful discussion amongst leaders. These exercises assist in eliminating “group think” during professional development sessions and encourage open discussion and maximum participation. These group discussion techniques lead to stronger relationships, a deeper understanding of oneself and others and a collective purpose to continuously grow as a team.

The 1-2-4 Whole Group and 6 Words discussion techniques are a direct excerpt from the TRADOC G2 Operational Environment Enterprise product:
