Colonel James E. Armstrong
Deputy Commander - Maneuver
Colonel James (Jim) Armstrong was commissioned from the United States Military Academy as an Armor Officer in 2001. As a company grade officer, he served as a Scout Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado; and as a plans officer, Company Commander, and Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General in the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York.
As a field-grade officer, Colonel Armstrong served as an operations officer at the Battalion and Brigade level in the 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He later served as an OC/T at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, and as the Concept Lead for the Joint Staff Innovation Group on the Joint Staff.
Colonel Armstrong commanded the 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor Regiment at Fort Riley, Kansas. He later served as the Deputy Chief of Staff and G35/7 at V Corps Headquarters at Fort Knox, Kentucky and Poznan, Poland. Colonel Armstrong then commanded the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Most recently, Colonel Armstrong commanded the Mission Command Training Program, U.S. Army Combined Arms Command, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Colonel Armstrong deployed to Iraq with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain Division, and deployed to Afghanistan with the 1st Cavalry Division. He also deployed as a rotational force to Korea with the 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor Regiment, to Poznan, Poland and Ansbach, Germany with V Corps Headquarters, and deployed as a rotational force to Poland and the Baltics with the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team.
Colonel Armstrong holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Systems Engineering from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Arts degree in Military History, and a Master of Strategic Studies degree from the U.S. Army War College.
