Command Sergeant Major Joseph J. Hissong

CSM Hissong was born in Fort Leonard Wood, MO, but raised in Dayton, OH. He entered the Army in August, 1995 and attended Basic Training and Infantry Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. His previous positions and duty assignments include: Squad Automatic Rifleman, Rifleman, Radio Telephone Operator, and Rifle Fire Team Leader while serving with C Company, 1st Battalion, 187 Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Rifle Fire Team Leader, Rifle Squad Leader, and Scout Squad Leader while serving with A and HHC Company, 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 172nd Separate Infantry Brigade, Fort Richardson, Alaska; Instructor/Writer for Basic Airborne Course, United States Army Jumpmaster Course, and the United States Army Pathfinder Course while serving with 1st Battalion 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia; Operations Sergeant while serving with 173rd Special Troops Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Bamberg, Germany; Rifle Platoon Sergeant while serving with A Company, 1st Battalion, 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy; Rifle Company First Sergeant while serving with B Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Reconnaissance Troop First Sergeant while serving with 4th Squadron 73rd Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Engagement Branch NCOIC and Operations Sergeant Major while serving with Security Assistance Training Management Organization (SATMO), Fort Bragg, North Carolina; USASMA/Pennsylvania State University Fellowship Director while assigned to United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (USASMA); CSM for 1st Battalion, 501st IN (ABN), 4th Brigade 25th IN Division, JBER, Alaska; CSM for 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. CSM Hissong is currently the CSM for JRTC Operations Group, Fort Polk, Louisiana.

He has deployed in direct support of Operation Enduring Freedom four times and one time in support of OIR. His positions held during combat operations include: Rifle Platoon Sergeant, Rifle First Sergeant, and Battalion and Brigade Command Sergeant Major. CSM Hissong deployed twice to RC East, once to RC South, once to TAAC-E, and once to Kuwait/Iraq.

CSM Hissong’s military schooling includes Battalion and Brigade Pre-Command Course, Command Sergeant Major Development Program, all NCOPDS courses, including the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (Class 66); United States Army Ranger School; Airborne School; Pathfinder School; and Jumpmaster School. His civilian education includes a Bachelor’s Degree of Professional Studies in Business Management from Excelsior College and Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Texas at El Paso.

CSM Hissong’s awards and decorations include: Legion of Merit; Bronze Star Medal (4); Meritorious Service Medal (4); Army Commendation Medal (3); Army Achievement Medal (8); Valorous Unit Award; Meritorious Unit Citation; Army Superior Unit Award (2); Good Conduct Medal (8); National Defense Service Medal (2); Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal (4); Non-Commissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon (5); Army Service Ribbon; NATO Service Medal (Afghanistan); and the Overseas Service Ribbon (4). He has also been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge; Expert Infantryman Badge; Ranger Tab; Master Parachutist Badge; Pathfinder Badge; and multiple foreign decorations including Thailand, Australian, German, Dutch, Japan, Philippines and Italian Parachutist Badges. CSM Hissong is also the recipient of the National Infantry Association’s Order of Saint Maurice and was inducted into the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club.
