Altered Traffic Pattern: Main Gate
On Tuesday, 1 June and Wednesday, 2 June, the traffic patterns at the Main Gate (South M Street) will be altered slightly to accommodate road construction. Each day, one lane inbound and one lane outbound will be closed. Additionally, South 8th Avenue will be closed, alternately, to the east and west, depending on the day.
To further clarify, on Tuesday, 1 June traffic will be closed westbound on South 8th Avenue requiring ALL inbound and outbound traffic to use the east leg of South 8th Avenue and South O Street, and on Wednesday, 2 June traffic will be closed eastbound on South 8th Avenue requiring ALL inbound and outbound traffic to use the west leg of South 8th Avenue and South J Street to come and go from the cantonment area. On the third day, lane striping will be painted under normal traffic conditions. Please see attached map for more information.
To summarize, traffic will use the Green Route on Tuesday and the Red Route on Wednesday. Of course, this is all subject to weather and the schedule will shift to the right as necessary. Hunter Education Course - Internet Field Day
The Fort McCoy Natural Resources Branch (NRB) has been coordinating WI Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) In-Person Hunter Education Training Courses on Fort McCoy for the last couple of years. All traditional In-Person Hunter Education courses have been suspended by the WDNR until June 30, 2021. Individuals can still obtain their Hunter Safety Certificate by successfully completing the Hunter Internet Field Day Online course through the WDNR and then attending (in-person) and passing an Internet Field Day. Traditionally students have had difficulty in finding a Hunter Internet Field Day close to home to fulfill their Online Hunter Safety Certificate requirements. The NRB, Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works is sponsoring a Wisconsin Hunter Internet Field Day on 10 April 2021 on Fort McCoy. This Field Day will provide students the opportunity for hands on handling of both shotguns and rifles and will cover topics such as: the 4 rules of firearm safety, safely loading and unloading a firearm, shooting positions, proper firearm carrying positions, proper way to cross a fence with a firearm, tree stand safety, tips for blood trailing an animal, etc. There will be no live firing of firearms during this Field Day.
There is no minimum age for taking the Hunter Education course. The course is written at a 6th grade level and students must be physically able to handle the firearms used during the Field Day. At the end of the Field Day, students will be required to pass a practical field test before being awarded their Hunter Safety Certificate. We anticipate the Field Day to run from 0800 to approximately 1500 hrs.
There will be no cost for the Hunter Internet Field Day Online course if you will be attending a Hunter Internet Field Day, but there will be a $10 fee for attending the Field Day (collected the day of). Upon successfully completing of the Hunter Internet Field Day online course, the student is awarded a Field Day voucher. Students must present the Field Day voucher to attend the in-person Hunter Internet Field Day course they enrolled in. Adults over 18 will have the option of testing out of the Internet Field Day. For those adults who chose to test out of the Field Day there will be a $24.50 charge for the online course and an additional WDNR $10 fee at the end of the online course. For more information concerning the Hunter Education Online Course please visit https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/Education/OutdoorSkills/onlineEd.
If you or a family member would like to earn your Hunter Safety Certificate by completing the Hunter Internet Field Day Online course and then attending this Hunter Internet Field Day, please contact the Permit Sales Office (608-388-3337) between 0700-1530 hours Monday – Friday to register. Each student will need to provide a WDNR Customer Number at the time of registration. Registration will occur on a first come first serve basis (course size limited to 24 individuals). If the Field Day has not filled by March 12, attendance will be opened up to those outside of the Fort McCoy community.
The successful completion of a Hunter Education Course is a requirement for anyone born after 1 January 1973 to purchase a hunting license in Wisconsin. Exceptions to this requirement are: Those hunting under the Hunter Mentorship Program and those that have proof of completing basic training in the U.S. Armed Forces, Reserves or National Guard do not need a Hunter Safety Course Certificate to purchase a hunting license in Wisconsin.
The Environmental Division plans to offer a Traditional In-Person Hunter Education course in August 2021 pending the lifting of the current suspension of such courses.

Automated Installation Entry (AIE) System
Effective Nov. 1, the Army's Automated Installation Entry (AIE) system will be fully installed on Fort McCoy at the Main Gate, Gate 20, Gate 1 (Old Main Gate) and the South Post Housing Guard Shack. Registration stations will also be installed in the Visitors Control Center (VCC). The AIE system increases security on post by electronically verifying the identity of individuals with DEERS and against local, state and federal criminal and terrorist databases. Once implemented, everyone will have their ID cards scanned with hand held card readers at the gates. Visitors will be directed to the VCC to register their driver's license or be issued an installation access card. Police officers have already been training intermittently on the system over the past couple weeks. Individuals may experience a slight delay the first time their CAC card is scanned and registered in the system. Please direct any questions to the Directorate of Emergency Services at (608) 388-2266.
