Division Artillery
Col. Charles J. Brown graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in systems engineering. He was first assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment (AFAR), 82nd Airborne Division, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served as a fire support officer and fire direction officer.
After completing the Field Artillery Officer Advanced Course, he commanded C Battery, 2nd Battalion, 8th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Brown subsequently served as a fire support officer/operations officer with 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, and as a joint operations planner (J35) with the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force–Afghanistan. He then attended intermediate-level education at the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation at Fort Benning, Georgia.
He returned to the 82nd Airborne Division, serving as the brigade fire support officer for the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, executive officer for 1st Battalion, 319th AFAR, and division artillery operations officer. Subsequently, he served as the chief of operational fires at Joint Special Operations Command. Brown returned to the 82nd Airborne Division, commanding the 2nd Battalion, 319th AFAR, “The Black Falcons.” After battalion command, he served as the division chief for fires in the Pentagon’s Headquarters Department of the Army G-8, Force Development Directorate.
Brown has several deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve. His military education includes the Field Artillery Basic and Advanced courses, U.S. Army War College, U.S. Army Ranger School, U.S. Army Advanced Airborne School, Joint Firepower Controller Course, Joint Collateral Damage Course, Special Operations Terminal Attack Controller Course and Unconventional Warfare.
He holds a Master of Science in international relations from Troy University and a master’s in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks.
Brown is married and has three children.
