Brigadier General Matthew Eichburg

Deputy Commander - Operations, 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss

Brig. Gen. Eichburg graduated from United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, and was commissioned as an armor officer in 1993.

From 1994 to 1997, BG Eichburg served in the 1st Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division in Vilseck, Germany, as a Tank and Scout platoon leader, deploying once to Bosnia.

From 1998 to 2003, he served as the Brigade S4, a tank company commander and the Headquarters and Headquarters Company commander in 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division and as a team leader and Battalion S3 in the 3rd Battalion, 395th Regiment, 75th Division (Active Component/Reserve Component) at Fort Hood, Texas.  While serving as Brigade S4, he supported the brigade’s successful deployment to Bosnia.

In 2005, he served as a contingency operations planner with the V Corps Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany, and deployed with the V Corps to Baghdad, Iraq. In July 2006, BG Eichburg served as the Executive Officer for the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment in Ramadi, Iraq until his assumption of duties as the Brigade Operations Officer (S3) in May 2007 in Baumholder, Germany. He served as the Brigade S3 for 20 months, which included a 2008 deployment to the Mada’in Qada in Iraq.

From July 2009 until June 2012, in both Baumholder, Germany, and Kunduz, Afghanistan, BG Eichburg commanded the 2nd Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, “Vanguards.” From February 2014 until its inactivation on July 2, 2015, he commanded the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team “Iron Team” in Camp Casey/Camp Hovey, South Korea. He served as the Eighth Army Chief of Staff from July 2015 to May 2016, followed by serving as the Executive Officer to the Commanding General, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command from May 2016 to March 2018.

From July 2018 until May 2019, BG Eichburg served as an Army Senior Fellow at Harvard’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.  In May 2019, he assumed the duties as the Deputy Commanding Officer – Support for the 1st Armored Division. In July 2019, with the deployment of the Division Headquarters, he assumed the duties as the Acting Commander for the 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss. In July 2020, he assumed the duties as Commanding General for the 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss.

BG Eichburg is a graduate of the Armor Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Ranger School, Airborne School, the Scout Platoon Leader’s Course, Combined Arms Services Staff School, the M1A2 Tank Commander’s Certification Course, Command and General Staff College, School of Advanced Military Studies, and the Senior Service College. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from the United States Military Academy, a master’s in Education from the University of St. Mary’s, a Master of Science from the School of Advanced Military Studies, and a Master of Science from the U.S. Army War College.   

BG Eichburg’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, Ranger Tab, the Combat Action Badge, the Army Parachutist Badge, and the Orders of Saint George, Saint Maurice, Saint Barbara and Saint Martin.
