COL Chad C. Chalfont

Chief of Staff, 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss

COL Chalfont received his commission as an Armor officer from the United States Military Academy in 1995. His first assignment was in 2-69 Armor, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia, where he served as a Tank Platoon Leader, Tank Company Executive Officer, and Battalion Assistant S-3. In 1999, COL Chalfont served as the Brigade Assistant S-3 (Plans) in 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. In 2001, he commanded D Company, 1-8 Cavalry (later reflagged to A Company, 1-8 Cavalry). In 2003, he attended graduate school and reported to West Point in 2005 to teach in the Department of History.

COL Chalfont deployed to Iraq in 2007 and served as the Team Chief for a Military Transition Team, advising an Iraqi battalion in Baghdad and Diyala Provinces. In 2009, he reported to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Irwin, California, and served as the 1st Squadron’s Executive Officer and Regimental Operations Officer. He deployed to Iraq in 2011 and served as the Deputy Executive Officer to the Commander, United States Forces Iraq. He later served as a Special Assistant to the Vice Chief of Staff, Army from 2012-2013.

COL Chalfont commanded 2-7 Infantry, 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, from 2013-2015. From March-June 2015, he served as the Task Force Commander for Operation Atlantic Resolve (North) with rotational forces positioned in the countries of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. He later served as a Politico-Military Affairs Officer in the Joint Staff J5 China Division from 2016-2018.

COL Chalfont’s military education includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, Field Artillery Advanced Course, Combined Arms Services Staff School, Command and General Staff School, and National War College. COL Chalfont earned a Master of Arts degree in History from Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Science degree in National Security Studies from the National War College.

COL Chalfont’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal (3 OLC), the Combat Action Badge, the Air Assault Badge, and the Army Staff and Joint Staff Identification Badges.
