The roots of the 1-41 FA trace back to August 26, 1918, when the unit was first constituted in the Regular Army as the 41st Artillery (Coast Artillery Corps) in Hawaii. Following several interwar reorganizations—including service as the Hawaiian Railway Battalion—the unit was formally redesignated on October 1, 1940, as the 41st Field Artillery Battalion. It was subsequently assigned to the illustrious 3rd Infantry Division (3rd ID) and activated at Fort Lewis, Washington. Armed with conventional 105 mm howitzers, the battalion entered the crucible of World War II, embarking on an arduous combat journey that spanned ten separate campaigns. The battalion’s wartime service was defined by relentless combat across North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany. The unit participated in highly contested amphibious landings, earning arrowhead credits for campaigns in Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Anzio, and Southern France. The battalion's most celebrated action occurred during the brutal winter fighting in the Colmar Pocket in early 1945. For its extraordinary heroism and devastating fire support during the defense of the Alsace region, the battalion was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and the French Croix de Guerre with Palm.

Following the Second World War, the unit underwent several structural transformations to adapt to the realities of the Cold War. In July 1957, the battalion was redesignated as the 1st Missile Battalion, 41st Artillery, and activated in West Germany. This transition marked a dramatic shift from conventional howitzers to tactical nuclear missiles, as the unit became a cornerstone of NATO’s forward-deployed deterrent against potential Soviet aggression.

By the late 1960s, the battalion, now operating from bases like Schwäbisch Gmünd, West Germany, traded its Pershing 1 systems for the upgraded Pershing 1A, and eventually transitioned to the advanced Pershing II missile system in 1984. Serving on the front lines of the Cold War, the soldiers of the 1-41 FA maintained a state of constant readiness, securing the European theater until the unit was inactivated in 1986.

In August 1988, the battalion was reactivated at Fort Stewart, Georgia, assigned to the 24th Infantry Division, and later returned to its historic home within the 3rd Infantry Division. The unit quickly returned to active combat, deploying in 1991 for Operation Desert Storm. Utilizing heavy self-propelled howitzers, the battalion provided critical artillery support during the rapid ground campaign that successfully liberated Kuwait. In the 21st century, the 1-41 FA remained at the vanguard of the Global War on Terror. Equipped with cutting-edge artillery platforms like the M109A6 Paladin and M777 towed howitzers, the battalion deployed multiple times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. During their 2012–2013 deployment to Zabul Province, Afghanistan, "Glory's Guns" made modern military history. In April 2013, Battery B fired the first XM1156 Precision Guidance Kit (PGK) fuse in combat, revolutionizing conventional artillery into a highly accurate precision weapon. Concurrently, Battery A set a combat record by firing an Excalibur GPS-guided round to a historic distance of 36,250 meters.

Today, the legacy of the 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery Regiment is written in the honors on its colors and the technological milestones it continues to set.
