The lineage of the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion began on October 10, 1927, with the formation of the 703rd Ordnance Light Maintenance Company, which initially consisted of just two motor pool sections. In May 1936, the unit underwent consolidation and reorganization, becoming Echo Company, 3rd Quartermaster Regiment, as an official element of the legendary 3rd Infantry Division. During World War II, the unit proved indispensable in sustaining the division's rapid movements across the European Theater. 

They participated in the crucial Allied invasion of Southern France under the U.S. VI Corps, providing rapid maintenance and logistical support that enabled the Seventh Army's advance. The battalion fought through major campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. Their exceptional bravery and technical expertise in the Colmar region earned them distinct recognition, a feat commemorated by the diagonally oriented mace from the Colmar coat of arms on the battalion’s unit crest. 

Following the Second World War, the battalion underwent several redesignations to meet the changing strategic demands of the Army. In October 1954, it was reorganized as the 703rd Ordnance Battalion, adopting the crimson and yellow colors of the Ordnance branch. Ten years later, on April 1, 1964, the unit became the 703rd Maintenance Battalion.  During the Korean War, the battalion provided vital maintenance and recovery operations, ensuring that the 3rd Infantry Division's armored vehicles and artillery remained operational in highly hostile and freezing environments. This critical service in Korea is immortalized on their unit crest by a blue oriental temple, matching the color of the Korean Service Ribbon. As the Cold War intensified, the battalion was forward-deployed to Germany. Stationed there as part of NATO’s forward defense, the "Maintainers" worked tirelessly to keep armored and mechanized units fully prepared to deter a potential Soviet invasion of Western Europe. 

In September 1987, the unit reorganized as the 703rd Support Battalion (later known as the 703rd Main Support Battalion). Shortly thereafter, the battalion was called upon to support Operation Desert Storm in 1991. In the harsh, sweeping sands of the Iraqi desert, the battalion sustained rapid, high-tempo maneuver warfare, keeping combat vehicles moving at unprecedented speeds. Undergoing further modular changes, the unit was officially designated as the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion in 2004, initially serving the 4th Brigade Combat Team before transitioning to support the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team. 

The onset of the Global War on Terrorism marked a period of continuous, highly decorated deployments for the 703rd BSB. During the 2003 invasion of Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom), the battalion was instrumental in sustaining the 3rd Infantry Division's historic, rapid advance to Baghdad. The battalion later returned during the 2007 troop surge, earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation for outstanding sustainment support under combat conditions. In 2013, the "Maintainers" deployed to Afghanistan's Logar and Wardak provinces for Operation Enduring Freedom. Operating as "Task Force Maintain" out of Forward Operating Base Shank, the battalion executed extensive tactical convoy operations and retrograde missions, earning a second Meritorious Unit Commendation. In recognition of its outstanding historic contributions, the battalion was awarded the prestigious Distinguished Unit of the Quartermaster Regiment award in 2017. Today, the 703rd BSB continues to uphold its legacy of excellence, remaining ready to deploy and sustain combat forces anywhere in the world.
