The 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment (3-67 AR)—known affectionately as the "Hounds of Hell"—has a rich and storied lineage within the United States Army. Carrying the motto "Ready for War," the battalion’s history reflects the evolution of American armored warfare, stretching from the battlefields of World War II to modern deployments in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

The roots of the 3-67 Armor lie in the broader 67th Armored Regiment, originally constituted in 1929 as the 2nd Tank Regiment. As the United States prepared for the realities of modern mechanized warfare, the regiment was redesignated as the 67th Armored Regiment in 1940 and assigned to the renowned 2nd Armored Division. During World War II, the regiment built a ferocious reputation. It saw its first action during Operation Torch in North Africa, followed by the Allied invasion of Sicily. In 1944, elements of the 67th landed in Normandy and played a critical role during Operation Cobra, helping break through German lines. The regiment continued its relentless advance across Europe, fighting fiercely in the Battle of the Bulge—for which they received the Belgian Fourragère—crossing the Rhine River, and ultimately entering Berlin in July 1945.

Following World War II, the US Army underwent significant restructuring. The 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor specifically emerged as an active unit in 1959 when it was organized as an Army Reserve element in Florida. Though inactivated in 1964, the "Hounds of Hell" lineage returned to the Regular Army on March 1, 1975, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, as part of the 2nd Armored Division. Throughout the latter half of the Cold War, the battalion stood as a bulwark of American defense, training rigorously for the prospect of conflict. As the Cold War ended and the Army downsized, 3-67 Armor experienced rapid organizational shifts. It was temporarily assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division in 1991, returned to the 2nd Armored Division in 1992, and eventually became an integral part of the 4th Infantry Division in 1996.

With the dawn of the 21st century, 3-67 Armor was called upon to project armored power in the Middle East. Operating under the 4th Infantry Division, the battalion deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During OIF I (2003–2004) and a subsequent deployment from 2005 to 2007, the Hounds of Hell proved the enduring value of heavy armor in modern warfare. They conducted stability operations, engaged opposing forces, and secured vital regions in Iraq. Despite their operational success, the battalion was inactivated in 2008 as part of a broader Army-wide reorganization.

The inactivation was only a temporary pause in the battalion’s history. On October 16, 2017, the 3rd Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment was officially reactivated at Fort Stewart, Georgia. This rebirth was part of the 3rd Infantry Division’s 2nd Brigade converting from an Infantry Brigade Combat Team to an Armored Brigade Combat Team. Embodying their motto, the modernized battalion quickly established tactical superiority, winning the prestigious Sullivan Cup for Best Tank Crew in 2018 and Best Bradley Crew in 2022. Today, 3-67 Armor remains on the front lines of global security. The unit deployed to Europe from 2019 to 2020, and again in September 2023 to Lithuania as a Task Force countering aggression, before redeploying in June 2024.

From breaking the Siegfried Line to patrolling modern Eastern Europe, the 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment has continuously answered the nation’s call. As a lethal and mobile armored force, the "Hounds of Hell" stand vigilant and perpetually "Ready for War".
