MISSION
The USAG Italy Military Equal Opportunity (MEO) Office assists Commanders and Leaders in the efforts to formulate and sustain a comprehensive effort to maximize human potential and to ensure fair treatment of all persons based solely on merit, performance, and potential in support of readiness.
Purpose
This page provides information about the U.S. Army's Military Equal Opportunity Policy, Complaint Process, and the Harassment Prevention and Response program in accordance with AR 600-20, Army Command Policy. It is the Commander policy to provide an environment free of unlawful discrimination and harassment to Soldiers, Family members, and DA Civilians.
Discrimination occurs when someone, or a group of people, is harassed, intimidated, insulted, humiliated, or treated less favorably than another person or group because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including pregnancy), or sexual orientation. It includes disparaging terms concerning a person's race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including pregnancy), or sexual orientation.
Harassment is unwelcome or offensive behaviors to a reasonable person, whether oral, written, or physical, that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment. Harassment can occur through electronic communications, including social media, other forms of communication, and in person. Harassment may include offensive jokes, epithets, ridicule or mockery, insults or put-downs, displays of offensive objects or imagery, stereotyping, intimidating acts, veiled threats of violence, threatening or provoking remarks, racial or other slurs, derogatory remarks about a person’s accent, or displays of racially offensive symbols.
The Military Equal Opportunity complaint processing system addresses complaints that allege unlawful harassment and discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including pregnancy), or sexual orientation. There are three types of complaint options: anonymous, informal and formal. Formal complaints are received by MEO professionals (MEO Program Manager, MEO SGM, MEO Advisor, and MEO Specialist) or RA/USAR Commanders. Equal Opportunity Leaders cannot receive formal complaints.
