SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii -- USO Hawaii Pathfinder hosted two employment workshops, here, July 1-2. Personnel learned about the opportunity through USO Hawaii Facebook, the Warrior Transition Battalion, and from folks passing along information.

On the agenda for the first day was discussion about the importance of LinkedIn and creating a profile. Then, recruiting manager Noe Silva, with the firm Robert Half, talked about cover letters and resumes, interviewing and personal branding.  The second day, participants talked to recruiters from various companies during a job fair.

Rebekah Medlin, a USO Hawaii Pathfinder site manager, stated, the event was "a great opportunity for spouses looking for employment and for transitioning service members."

For Brian Elkin, with 3rd Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, information about what to include, and what not to include, on cover letters and resumes was most helpful. However, Kristin Kennedy, a volunteer with USO Pathfinder, fully appreciated information about how to translate military life terms and acronms to civilian language.

Day One wrapped up with a presentation from Bronagh Friel, a program lead for Veterans and Military Families with "Grow With Google."

Grow With Google has a number of tools and programs for veterans and military families. Friel said, by searching for "jobs for veterans," on Google, transitioning service members can enter their specific military occupational specialty, or MOS, to see relevant civilian jobs that reqire similar skills to those used in their military roles.

Also, now an improved experience within jobs on Google Search makes it easier for military spouses to find quality remote jobs by searching "work from home jobs" and filtering for roles that meet their criteria.

Friel also explained the Primer app, which is a free resource for learning business and marketing skills. "Minicourses" share tips for transitioning to remote work, working from home and the basics of starting and growing  an online business. Spouses should search  at #milspousebiz or #milspouse.
