First, a reminder: the tax filing deadline is April 15, 2020.  With that out of the way there are free online resources available for military members to file their taxes and learn about important tax benefits that are available to them.

A free online tax filing service is available for service members through Military OneSource.  You will need to register for a free account with Military OneSource before accessing the vendor’s page.  When accessing the program it is important to do so through Military OneSource rather than going directly to the program vendor.  This ensures free access.

Resources are also available if you need assistance in completing your taxes.  Military tax consultants are available by phone or online.  There are also several articles that discuss key changes to the tax code, including changes to the standard deduction for singles (or couples filing separately) and married couples filing jointly as well as eliminating the deduction for alimony payments.

To access the tax software and treasure trove of information, visit https://www.militaryonesource.mil/financial-legal/tax-resource-center/miltax-military-tax-services.

For more information and help, there are various free tax help sites around the State of Hawaii.  For a full list of sites please visit https://www.hawaiitaxhelp.org/free-tax-help/free-tax-sites/.
