SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii – Beginning Wednesday, Jan. 8, the Schofield Commissary will launch three new features for patrons shopping at the grocery store: Home Meal Replacement, expanded organic produce, and Demo Wednesdays.

“Trends are showing that folks are busy and are looking for quick easy meals. They don’t have time to cook. They do, however, discretionary spending,” said Brad McMinn, store director, Schofield Commissary. “The Home Meal Replacement expands our hot food selection. It’s ready to eat, ready to go. We’re tapping into this trend to see if we can make mealtime easier for our customers.”

Monday through Friday, items will be featured during lunch (11 a.m.-2 p.m.) and dinner (3:30-6:30 p.m.).

  • Mondays are Italian meals stuffed bell peppers and lasagna.
  • Tuesdays are barbecue meals barbecue chicken and ribs.
  • Wednesdays are home-style meals meatloaf and barbecued pulled pork.
  • Thursdays are local favorite meals teriyaki chicken and kalua pork.
  • Fridays are another barbecue day with ribs and meatballs.

The Schofield Commissary will also expand the amount of organic produce it carries. These items will be featured in the produce section, right when patrons enter the front of the store. Patrons may select from apples, broccoli and a host of other foods.

McMinn said, “We get feedback from customers stating they go to other stores for organics, but I say we have that we have ‘better for you’ groceries, here, too. It’s not only available, but usually costs a bit less.”

On Demo Wednesdays, the Commissary will feature five to six selections for demos from 2-6 p.m. throughout the store. Demos may include produce and some meat; they will be new foods, staple foods, products being featured because they save the customer money, and more.

“We’re trying to make it a little more exciting to come to the Commissary,” McMinn explained. “Our customers are obviously looking for these things since they’re going to other stores and finding them.”

A customer browsing through a brochure said the new features definitely look quite interesting.

“I’m going to come through during lunch one day this week,” he said. “I’m sure I can find something that will entice me.”
