FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii — The “new and improved” Nagorski Golf Course will reopen on Aug. 30 after an extensive one-year renovation. The 9-hole course will be available to all Department of Defense ID cardholders and their guests, every day of the week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The renovation includes the addition of an irrigation system, where previously all watering was done by hand. All of the greens, tees and fairways have been excavated for rock removal and re-planted for optimal grass conditions. All golf carts have been replaced and now equipped with GPS.

The renovated course is well rounded for players of all skill levels, providing golfers a challenge with undulating fairways, dramatic elevation changes, small greens and breathtaking views of downtown Honolulu and Diamond Head.  Nagorski’s chipping facility and practice greens are well suited for beginners learning the game of golf, as well as seasoned players keeping their games honed.

Named for World War II Army veteran Walter J. Nagorski, the course was built in the 1940s with its low-lying lands of holes 2 and 3 built over a World War II emergency landing strip. A sign designating that area as Putnam Airfield stands there as a testament to the heritage of the area.

A grand opening ceremony and tournament will be held Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. The golf course will then feature a variety of men’s, women’s and couples leagues:

Men’s League (beginning Sept. 5)
