WHEELER ARMY AIRFIELD, Hawaii (Oct. 20, 2020) -- The influenza season is here, so service members, families, civilians and veterans should get their flu shots to stay healthy.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older to reduce prevalence of illness caused by the flu and prevent symptoms that might be confused with those of COVID-19.
All active duty personnel will get their flu vaccination from the unit or Solider Centered Medical Home.
Vaccines are available now at the Desmond T. Doss Health Clinic on Schofield Barracks for high-risk beneficiaries (under age 3, pregnant or over age 65) but by appointment only. Call (808) 433-8129 or (808) 433-8155 to make an appointment.
Vaccines will be available for all other Tricare beneficiaries in November. Tricare beneficiaries can get their flu shot from commercial providers by showing their ID card. Proof of vaccination should be shared with primary care providers to update immunization records.
Tripler Army Medical Center will have vaccines available Sunday, Nov. 15 and 22 and Dec. 6 and 13 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Mountainside Lanai. No appointments are needed. Call (808) 433-6334 for more details.
The Desmond T. Doss Health Clinic will have a drive-thru vaccine at the Wheeler Gulch Wednesday-Friday, Nov. 18-20 from 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 21, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. No appointments are needed.
The drive-thru flu event will allow families to get vaccinated together. Beneficiaries ages 9 and older will get a vaccine from inside the vehicle, through the window or door. Beneficiaries ages 8 and under will exit the vehicle to a socially distanced station.
For more information about the drive-thru flu vaccination event, visit https://www.army.mil/article/240362 or text the word “FLU” to 31996 for directions, hours of operation, and updates.
Child, Youth and School Services patrons are required to provide proof of this season's flu vaccine or request a waiver for religious or medical reasons by Dec. 1. For more information, contact Parent Central Services at (808) 655-5314 or (808) 655-8380.
Beneficiaries who do not get their flu shot during the Desmond T. Doss Health Clinic's or Tripler Army Medical Center's flu vaccine events can still get vaccinated by making an appointment. For the Desmond T. Doss Health Clinic, call (808) 433-8129 or (808) 433-8155, or ask for the vaccine at your next well-visit appointment. For Tripler Army Medical Center or the Warrior Ohana Medical Home, make an appointment with your primary care manager.
