Col. Kenneth M. Reed Jr., Commander

627th Hospital Center

Col. Kenneth M Reed Jr. is a native of Port Norris, New Jersey, and commissioned into the Medical Service Corps in 2004 through the ROTC program at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina.

His assignments include the 50th Main Support Battalion, 42nd Infantry Division, New Jersey National Guard (active-duty augmentee), where he served as a treatment platoon leader during the 2005 Operation Iraqi Freedom deployment: two tours at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served as battalion medical officer, 2nd Battalion (Airborne), 321st Field Artillery Regiment; company commander, 782nd Brigade Support Battalion; and 4th Brigade Combat Team medical planner within the 82nd Airborne Division through two tours to Afghanistan. 

Additionally, he served as chief of plans, battalion S3, and battalion executive officer for the 28th Combat Support Hospital (Operation Inherent Resolve) and executive officer, 44th Medical Brigade, Medical Operations, U.S. Army Forces Command Surgeon Directorate (Organizational Integrator - Sourcing) during the outbreak of COVID-19. Other assignments include chief of plans, training, mobilization and security and chief, information management officer at Keller Army Community Hospital, West Point, New York; liaison officer to the Department of Health and Human Service (NORAD and U.S. Northern Command), Washington, D.C. For battalion command, he was assigned to the California Medical Detachment, in Monterey, an outpatient clinic serving the Defense Language Institute and Naval Post Graduate School. Reed’s most recent assignment was a Secretary of Defense Executive Fellow with CVS Health corporate office under the U.S. Army War College Fellowship Program.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with four oak leaf clusters and Army Achievement Medal with silver oak leaf cluster. He is a recipient of the Capt. John R. Teal Leadership Award (2017) and is inducted into the Official Order of Military Medical Merit. He possesses the “A” proficiency designator awarded by the Surgeon General. He has earned the Expert Field Medical Badge, Combat Medical Badge, Parachutist Badge and Air Assault Badge with foreign awards including the Irish Parachutist Badge and German Armed Forces Badge for Military Proficiency (Gold).

His military education includes the Army Medical Department Officer Basic and Advanced courses, Command and General Staff College (resident course), Support Operations Officer Course, U.S. Army Jumpmaster Course and the U.S. Army War College (SECDEF Executive Fellowship). He holds a master’s degree in business and organizational security management.

Reed is married and has two children.
