SAINT-MIHIEL, France — Sgt. John P. Simmons, a forward observer assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 77th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Infantry Division Artillery, 4th Infantry Division, walks by tombstones June 2, 2025, at Saint-Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial. As the first family member to return since 1930, Simmons’ presence at the grave represented a bridge between past sacrifice and present service.
