Lt. Col. Nicholas S. Tallant, Battalion Commander 

Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion

Lt. Col. Nicholas S. Tallant has served as the 4th Infantry Division’s Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion commander since June 2024.  During his previous assignment, he served on the Commander’s Action Group at U.S. Special Operations Command at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida.

A California native, Tallant graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science in business administration. After working in corporate finance, he commissioned as an infantry officer in 2006 through Officer Candidate School. 

Tallant was first assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington, where he served in multiple roles, including as a platoon leader deployed to Southern Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. 

As a special forces officer, Tallant first served with 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Carson, Colorado, deploying multiple times to Africa and Eastern Europe in support of contingency operations and security cooperation missions.  Subsequently, Tallant served as the aide-de-camp to the commander of U.S. Special Operations Command North at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. 

Tallant returned to 10th Special Forces Group serving as a company commander, battalion operations officer and group operations officer, including service overseas supporting Operation Atlantic Resolve in Europe. He has operated extensively with multiple allies and partners throughout Europe, Africa and North America.

Tallant possesses a master’s in public policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government — which he attended as part of the Army’s General Wayne A. Downing Scholarship. He is also a graduate of the Infantry Office Basic Course, Reconnaissance and Surveillance Leaders Course, Maneuver Captain’s Career Course, Special Forces Qualification Course and Command and General Staff College. 

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Combat and Expert Infantryman Badges, Senior Parachutist Badge, Special Operations Diving Supervisor Badge, Air Assault Badge and multiple foreign jump wings. 

Tallant is married and has four children.
