Command Sgt. Maj. Edgard Gonzalez

4th Combat Aviation Brigade

Born in Nicaragua and raised in Miami, Florida, Command Sgt. Maj. Edgard Gonzalez entered the United States Army Sept. 12, 1997. He completed Basic Training and Advance Individual Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Gonzalez served in various leadership assignments beginning as a Scout helicopter section sergeant in Alpha Company, 8th Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where in 2003 he deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom in support of the 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry. In December 2004, he was a member of Delta Troop, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he functioned as a technical inspector and deployed to Iraq as the detachment NCOIC for the Quality Control Office in 2006. He became a detachment platoon sergeant for Rear Detachment, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry, after completing the SFAA in 2008. Then, he attained the maintenance platoon sergeant position in Delta Troop, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry, where he twice deployed to Afghanistan (2010 and 2012). 

Gonzalez functioned in the capacity as both the platoon sergeant and the first sergeant with Charlie Troop, 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, during 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry, Korea rotation 15-01. He served as the first sergeant for Task Force Hammerhead during Pacific Pathways Rotation 17-01 to Thailand and South Korea. Upon his return, Gonzalez took Charlie Troop to the National Training Center Rotation 17-05. Gonzalez also served as a first sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 166th Aviation Brigade, Fort Cavazos, Texas, during the reactivation of the 166th Aviation Brigade. He was selected to attend the United States Sergeant Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas. Upon graduating, he was immediately assigned as the senior operations sergeant for 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, Camp Humphreys, South Korea. He served as the 3-17 ACS command sergeant major from 2021-2023 and recently returned from Operation Resolve in Poland.

 Gonzalez has completed all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System; battalion CSM Development Program; Sergeants Major Course; First Sergeant Course; Battle Staff Course; Equal Opportunity Course; Transportation/Storage of Hazardous Material Course; Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Officer Course; Master Driver Course; Airborne School; Air Assault Course; Combative Level 1; and Combat Lifesavers Course. Additionally, his civilian education includes an associate degree in general studies from the University of Phoenix, and a bachelor’s degree in leadership and workforce development from the United States Army War College.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with six oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation with two oak leaf clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal (silver clasp with 1 knot), National Defense Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal with bronze service star, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars, Iraq Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars, Global War on Terrorism Expedition Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon (Numeral 4), Non-Commissioned Officer Development Ribbon (Numeral 5), Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Master Aviation Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Driver Badge (Wheel) and The Order of Saint Michael. 

Gonzalez is married and has two daughters.
