Lt. Col. Jamaal D. Smart, Battalion Commander

Army Field Support Battalion - Carson

Lt. Col. Jamaal D. Smart assumed command of the Army Field Support Battalion-Carson on June 18, 2026, at Fort Carson, Colorado.

Smart previously served as support operations officer, 1st Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

His previous assignments include deploying as a platoon leader with the 89th Transportation Company, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia; operations officer, 53rd Movement Control Battalion; operations officer, 47th Brigade Support Battalion; commander, Forward Support Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division; Captain’s Career Course small group leader, Army Logistics University; commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Task Force J4 (Logistics) Army Special Operations and Joint Special Operations, Iraq; support operations officer and battalion executive officer, 215th BSB,  3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cav. Div.; assistant executive officer and aide de camp to the Army Futures Command commanding general.

Smart’s deployments to Iraq were in support of operations Iraqi Freedom, New Dawn and Inherent Resolve.

His military education includes the Joint Logistics Course, Theater Logistics Planners Course, Combined Logistics Captain’s Course and Transportation Officer Basic Course.

Smart received his commission as a transportation officer in 2008 from the University of West Florida. He holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational communication from the University of West Florida, a masterss degree in logistics management from the Florida Institute of Technology, and a master’s degree in operational studies, Army Command and General Staff College.

His military awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals,  Joint Service Commendation Medal with “C” device, three Army Commendation Medals  and the Joint Service Achievement Medal.

Smart is a native of Cantonment, Florida. He is married with two children.
