DIVARTY History
The 4th Infantry Division Artillery (4th DIVARTY) was first constituted as Headquarters Battery, 4th Field Artillery Brigade, on Nov. 19, 1917, at Camp Greene, North Carolina, and assigned to the 4th Infantry Division. The brigade departed for World War I in Europe in the winter of 1918. Upon arrival to France, the brigade participated in the Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Champagne 1918 and Lorrain 1918 campaigns and earned three campaign streamers within the year. Upon returning stateside, the 4th Field Artillery Brigade was stationed at Camp Lewis, Washington, until it was inactivated Sept. 21, 1921.
The 4th Field Artillery Brigade was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Field Artillery, and was reconstituted as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Division Artillery (DIVARTY), on Sept. 10, 1940, and activated Oct. 1, 1940, at Fort Benning, Georgia, after being relocated from Fort Sill, Oklahoma. 4th Field Artillery Brigade participated in five World War II campaigns to include storming the beaches at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe. For its efforts, the brigade was awarded the Belgian Army Order of the Day of 1940 and the Belgian Fourragere by Prince Charles of Belgium.
Following World War II, the 4th DIVARTY was inactivated at Camp Butler, North Carolina, on March 5, 1946. Over the next two decades, the brigade would be reactivated and relocated on multiple occasions. On July 6, 1948, at Fort Ord, California, 4th Division Artillery was reactivated. However, the brigade was moved on April 1, 1957, to Fort Lewis, Washington, when the Fort Ord training area was deactivated. At this time, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Division Artillery, was reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Infantry DIVARTY.
The 4th DIVARTY deployed from Fort Lewis, Washington, to Vietnam in September 1966. While deployed in Vietnam, the brigade participated in Phases I-VII of the Counteroffensive Campaign, the Tet Counteroffensive, and the Sanctuary Counteroffensive. By December 1970 the unit returned from South Vietnam to Fort Carson, Colorado. For its efforts, the brigade received the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the Civil Action. During that same year, the unit redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Infantry Division Artillery (Mechanized). This last redesignation named the Division Artillery the “Iron Gunners,” which complemented the “Ironhorse” Division. With the realignment and downsizing of the Army force, the unit was reassigned to Fort Hood, Texas, Dec. 15, 1995.
In support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the 4th Field Artillery deployed to the Middle East in March 2003 where it took command of FOB Gunner in Taji, Iraq. The unit had the honor of being the location for storage and reconsolidation of enemy arms to be redistributed to the Iraqi Civil Defense Force (ICDF) until the brigade redeployed in February 2004. On Dec. 16, 2004, the 4th Infantry Division Artillery was transformed and restructured to the 4th Fires Brigade as the headquarters for the three field artillery battalions in the division. The brigade was inactivated on April 16, 2007, at Fort Hood, Texas, due to the realignment of Army units. In July 2009, the 4th Division Headquarters relocated from Fort Hood, Texas, to Fort Carson, Colorado, to reconsolidate the entire division in a central location.
On May 6, 2015, the brigade was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Infantry Division Artillery, at Fort Carson, Colorado, and unfurled its colors on Founders Field on May 14. In 2016, the 4th Division Artillery was renamed the “Ivy Gunners” to complement the “Ivy Division.” The 4th DIVARTY deployed to Adazi, Latvia, in support of Operation Assure, Deter, and Reinforce from Jan. 15, 2023, to Sept. 7, 2023.
