You Can Prevent a DWI
By Rosanna Azani, Fort Bliss Legal Assistance Office
Driving While Intoxicated incidents are expensive, life-altering (negatively) and embarrassing for those who are charged with them. DWIs in Texas can cost a lot of money. Some say, “I’ll just pay a fine and move on.” Unfortunately, the reality is far more complex.
Driving while intoxicated endangers not only yourself but also others on the road. Fines can be up to $2000 for a first offense. Hiring an attorney is not easy and it is not cheap. Their services can cost many thousands of dollars. You may be held financially responsible for repairing vehicles, buildings, or other property damaged in an accident. Your insurance premium may increase, double or even triple. You know what is cheaper than all of this? Getting a ride-sharing service, paying someone for a ride, or staying home.
DWIs can alter your life in the worst way. Not only will you pay for fines and other unnecessary charges, you may also go to jail, lose your job (even if you are in the military), and lose your spouse/significant other/situationships.
Going to jail is unpleasant and it will affect your relationship with loved ones. Friends, family, and colleagues may view you differently after a DWI. This charge will be with you forever. Many employers conduct background checks, and a DWI can be a red flag, resulting in an undesirable job. Landlords may deny applications from individuals with criminal records, and if your license is suspended due to the DWI, you may need to rely on public transportation, rideshares, or friends and family to get you to work or to any place else you need to get to.
Getting charged with a DWI leads to a domino effect of horrible events, which can all be avoided by simply choosing the other available alternatives mentioned above. DWIs, especially in El Paso, are embarrassing! Your mugshot will be posted on popular social media sites for millions to see, including your family and friends. This is not the kind of recognition you want. Avoid DWIs!
