WELCOME TO ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND

Gate Hours & Directions
Aberdeen Proving Ground is comprised of two areas: the Aberdeen Area/APG North and Edgewood Area/APG South. These areas are not connected but are within a short driving distance of one another. The regular gate hours of operation are listed below.

Aberdeen Area/APG North Gate Schedule
MD 715 (Maryland Boulevard): Open 24/7/365. All DoD or Federal Identification card holders may use this access control point. All trucks, commercial deliveries, non-DoD / Federal ID card-holders, and visitors MUST use the access control point for entry to APG North

MD 22 (Harford Boulevard): Open between 5:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. every day including weekends and holidays. This gate is open to outbound traffic only Monday - Friday until 6 p.m., and is open only to personnel with a DoD or Federal Identification Card, visitors with a DoD or Federal identification card holder escort that must remain with them the entire duration they are on the installation.

APG North Visitor Control Center Operations:
MD 715: 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday
MD 715 : Closed on weekends and holidays

Edgewood Area/APG South Gate Operations:
Route 24/Hoadley Road Gate: Open 24/7/365
Wise Road Gate: Open Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Closed Saturday, Sunday and Federal Holidays. 

THE WISE ROAD GATE IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED.

APG South Visitor Control Center Operations:
MD 24: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, Closed on Weekends and Holidays

Driving Directions
To APG - Aberdeen Area/APG North via Maryland Blvd (Rt. 715) Gate

  • Destinations South of APG: Take I-95 North towards New York. Please be advised of tolls.
  • Destinations North of APG: Take I-95 South towards Baltimore. Please be advised of tolls.
  • Take exit 80 (Belcamp) and turn onto MD-543 South.
  • Continue on MD 543 for approximately 1.5 miles.
  • Take exit to US 40 East.
  • Follow Route 40 and take the MD 715 exit for Aberdeen Proving Ground.
  • Proceed to APG Visitor's Center on the right. Use far right-hand lane to access Visitor's Gate.

 

To APG - Edgewood Area/APG South via Route 24 Gate

  • Destinations South of APG: Take I-95 North towards New York. Please be advised of tolls.
  • Destinations North of APG: Take I-95 South towards Baltimore. Please be advised of tolls.
  • Take exit 77 (Edgewood/Bel Air), Route 24 South toward Edgewood.
  • Keep straight on Route 24 and follow signs to the Visitors' Center once you arrive at the installation.

From Aberdeen Area/APG North to Edgewood Area/APG South

  • Exit from the 715 Gate, merge onto Route 40 West/Pulaski Hwy.
  • Continue on Route 40 West/Pulaski Hwy for approximately 10 miles.
  • Take Route 24 exit on right, just before the overpass.
  • Make left at traffic signal light, onto Route 24 and continue straight.
  • Proceed to Route 24 Gate and enter Visitor's Center on the right.

From Edgewood Area/APG South to Aberdeen Area/APG North

  • Exit from the Route 24 Gate.
  • Take the Route 40/Pulaski Hwy exit on right and turn left onto Route 40 East at the traffic signal.
  • Follow Route 40 and take the MD 715 exit for Aberdeen Proving Ground.
  • Proceed on Maryland Blvd (Rt. 715); use far right-hand lane to access the Visitor's Center.

Visitors and Deliveries

  • Visitors and deliveries must enter through the Maryland Boulevard (Route 715) Gate for Aberdeen Area/APG North or the Hoadley Road (Route 24) Gate for Edgewood Area/APG South.
  • Entry to the installation requires a valid photo ID for attendees 18 and over, not a requirement for anyone under the age of 18 to have a picture ID unless they are driving.
  • Drivers must present a valid driver's license and current vehicle registration
  • All persons and their possessions, to include vehicles, are subject to inspection by the Aberdeen Proving Ground Police Department.
  • Currently DoD Registration stickers are not required or offered at APG.

Motor Vehicle Insurance and Driving Requirements
Each person operating a motor vehicle in the state of Maryland must have insurance that complies with Maryland Law. This requirement also applies to non-resident owners or registrants of motor vehicles physically present within the state for more than 90 of the preceding 365 days.

Driver safety requirements for APG are as follows:

  • While driving a privately owned vehicle (POV) or operating a government vehicle, a hands-free device must be used when talking on a cellular phone.
  • Texting is not permitted while driving
  • Speed detection devices cannot be utilized on any DoD installation.
  • All occupants must wear seat belts regardless of position in vehicle. Children age six and under must be buckled up regardless of where they are sitting in the vehicle; children ages four and five must be secured in either a seat belt or approve child restraint seat; children under the age of 4 must be secured in an approved car seat.
  • Full headlights are required when driving in rain, at dusk or in fog.
