How to Dial German Phone Numbers
Calling German phone numbers from a German phone line
To dial a German commercial phone number from a German phone line (including a cell phone with a SIM card from a German provider), you can dial the number without a country code and add a zero. If using the country code of +49, drop the zero.
For example, if a number is listed as +49 (0) 123 456 7890, dial from a cell phone (on a German network) either as 01234567890 or +491234567890.
Calling German phone numbers from U.S. phone numbers
To dial a German commercial telephone number from the United States: Dial 011 49 and drop the first 0 of the commercial telephone number.
Calling German phone numbers from other EU phone numbers
To dial a German commercial telephone number from an EU number, outside of Germany: Dial 0049 and drop the first 0 of the commercial telephone number. If using a cell phone, you can also use +49 (on most phones, you can get the + sign by holding down 0 on the dialer).
If dialing from a phone on the Defense Switched Network (DSN), anywhere in the world, ignore the above instructions and simply dial the ten-digit DSN number directly.
