Unit History

The 87th Division Sustainment Support Battalion (DSSB), known as the "Base of the Pyramid", as U.S. Army logistics unit headquartered assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade. Originally established as the 87th Separate Quartermaster Battalion (Light Maintenance) on May 1, 1936, at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. Activated on June 9, 1941, at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, the unit reorganized and converted multiple times during the World War II, ultimately designated as the 87th Ordnance Medium Maintenance Battalion in August 1942.

 

  Modern History and Campaigns

+1992: Deployed in support of disaster relief efforts during Operation Hurricane Andrew Relief at Homestead Air Force Base, Florida.

+1993: Redesignated as the 87th Support Battalion (Corps).

+1994: Provided logistical support to the 24th Infantry Division in Kuwait during Operation Vigilant Warrior.

+2005–2006: Deployed to Camp Taji, Iraq, in support of the 3rd Infantry Division, driving over two million miles to transport supplies and support convoy security.

+Reorganization (2023): Renamed from the 87th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB) to the 87th Division Sustainment Support Battalion (DSSB) to align with new Army sustainment doctrine.

+Recent Deployments: Continues to support global rotational forces, notably sending elements to Europe in March 2022 and 2024 to support NATO allies
