Description & rules

This event is a Single elimination event consisting of a minimum of 8 teams, preferred 32 teams, and no more than 64 teams; competing in 15 minute matches.

Teams consist of no less than 5 players and have no more than 10 players per team.

Teams may only consist of Spouses and Soldiers.

Teams will be bracketed to compete with teams outside of their units if possible for the first round of elimination games. Standard tournament bracket procedures will be followed for each additional round of games.

The typical Dodgeball court is about the size of a smallVolleyball court, with a centerline and 2 sidelines.

There are 4 referees, in which 2 are stationed at the end of thecenterline, that help facilitate the game. Referees start the game, confirmhits and catches, and count ball possession time.

Winner is determined by the team that can out ALL players amongthe opposing team.

The beginning of the game will begin when a referee hasacknowledged both teams are ready and sounds off with “3, 2, 1…Dodgeball!”Games will cease during victories with the long blast of a whistle. One Quickblasts of the whistle indicate a game pause with referee ruling or safety call. Two Quick Blasts of the whistle indicate to continue play.

There are 6 balls, spread across the centerline. During theopening rush (when the game starts), taking a ball will be conducted by first, come first serve. Once a player secures a ball, the player must tag the rearwall/fence of their side of the court before engaging opponents.

You are out if: 1) you step on or over a sideline or centerline;2) a thrown live ball hits your body; and 3) you throw a live ball and it iscaught by an opponent. Note: “caughtis caught; whether standing or laying, so long as you were in the boundaries ofplay. If any part of the body falls out of boundaries during a catch or ontothe opponent side, you are out and the opponent team player who threw the ballwill still be in the game. Exception: If a ball deflects off of an object orperson and a subsequent player makes a clean catch, the ball is dead, and thethrower is still in play.

A thrown live ball can only hit out 1 player. Thrown balls thathit the ground, the wall, other balls, or other objects before hitting theopponent are considered dead balls, and are ineligible to hit players out.

You may block a thrown ball with a held ball. However, if youdrop the blocking ball during the act of blocking, or if you fail to make aclean block (as in the thrown ball still ends up hitting or grazing your bodyafterwards), you are out. You mayonly catch one ball. A simultaneous and/or near-simultaneous catch of more thanone dodgeball when both are considered “LIVE”, results in an out for thecatching player. Securing more than one to throw is legal as long as all additionalcaught dodgeballs are “DEAD”.

If you are out, line up on the side in the order you got out(think of it as being in a “resurrection” line). If your teammate catches aball, the player at the start of your team’s “resurrection” line comes backinto play after touching the wall (teammates are resurrected in the order inwhich they were tagged out, and the next in line must have at least one foot onthe resurrection line (referees point out the line). If your team has a playerthat jumps ahead of line into play, that player will go to the end of theresurrection line, and the team will suffer a forfeit of a resurrection.

You can only hold a ball for 10 seconds, afterwards, it will beconsidered dead. Dead balls need to be rolled over immediately to the other team.

If the game comes down to 1 player per side, they have 10seconds to hit each other out; if not, "Showdown" comes into effect. The game is paused, each player gets two balls, two balls are lined up at the endsof the centerline, and the centerline is dissolved. The first player to get theother player out wins.

Head Shots are not permitted. If you strike an opponent in thehead you will be out. If an opponent clearly puts their head in the line ofpath with a ball to create an out, the thrower will continue to play, and theone purposely causing a strike to the head will be out.

Youwill have roughly 20 minutes to compete a match of 3 games in order todetermine winner by 2 out of 3.

Dueto the design of the courts, dodgeballs that fall out of the area of play willbe placed back into the hemisphere of play by a referee only. Watch thisDemonstration: Example. If Team A throws a dodgeball at Team B and if fallsoutside of the play area in Team B’s half, it will be placed at the most rearand center section of Team B’s half of the Court, and visa-versa. If theDodgeballs fall outside the sideline halves, the referees will roll them backinto the half of the court and side of the court they had rolled out.

Whatare your questions? Have fun, shake hands, makefriends and be spirited!
