The lineage of the 3rd BSB traces its roots back to the bloody trenches of World War I. The unit originally entered federal service in 1917 as the 3rd Supply Train, organic to the newly formed 3rd Division.

The battalion's identity was forged during the brutal Second Battle of the Marne in July 1918. When German forces launched their massive Spring Offensive, attempting to cross the Marne River and strike towards Paris, the 3rd Division famously held the line, earning the legendary moniker "Rock of the Marne." The 3rd Supply Train worked tirelessly under heavy enemy artillery fire to push critical ammunition, rations, and medical supplies to the frontline doughboys. The unit's motto specifically honors their logistical triumph during the Allied counterattack, symbolizing their drive to "roll forward and cross" the bridge at Château-Thierry to push the German army back.

Throughout World War II and the Korean War, the logistical elements of the 3rd Infantry Division evolved to meet the demands of modern, mechanized warfare. The division's supply trains, medical battalions, and maintenance companies fought across North Africa, stormed the beaches of Sicily and Italy, and fought through the freezing mountains of the Korean peninsula.

During the Cold War, as the United States Army transitioned its doctrine to counter the Soviet threat in Western Europe, the concept of the Forward Support Battalion (FSB) was born. Re-designated as the 3rd Forward Support Battalion, the unit was tailored to directly support a maneuver brigade, placing mechanics, medics, and supply specialists directly on the frontlines alongside the tanks and infantry they supported.

The true test of the battalion’s modern capabilities came during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) in 2003. Assigned to support the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, the battalion executed one of the most complex combat logistics operations in modern military history.

During the rapid armored invasion of Iraq, the 3rd BSB had to sustain the brigade's M1A1 Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles across hundreds of miles of austere desert, constantly moving "beans and bullets" while defending their own vulnerable supply convoys from insurgent ambushes. When the 1st Brigade Combat Team executed the historic "Thunder Run" into the heart of downtown Baghdad and seized the Baghdad International Airport, it was the 3rd BSB that successfully navigated contested supply routes to ensure the armored columns never ran out of fuel or ammunition during the heavy urban fighting. Over the next decade, the battalion completed multiple grueling combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, adapting to counter-insurgency operations while continuing to provide flawless logistical support.

Today, the 3rd Brigade Support Battalion operates under the Army's modular brigade structure, providing comprehensive, multi-functional logistics to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team.

Recently, the 3rd BSB has played a critical role in supporting NATO's Eastern Flank. Deploying alongside the 1ABCT to Europe for Operation Assure, Deter, and Reinforce, the battalion manages massive international rail movements, heavy equipment transportation, and multinational supply chains across Poland and the Baltic States. By ensuring the "Raider" Brigade's armor is always fully fueled, perfectly maintained, and heavily armed, the 3rd Brigade Support Battalion guarantees that the 3rd Infantry Division remains a lethal and unyielding force on the modern battlefield.
